Made my first trip out this morning to Scofield and was greeted by 12 degrees. Fished just out from the boat ramp in the finger by the dam. Met "the trout slayer" and he was living up to his name. It was nice to meet you. 6 inches solid, clear ice. I was surprised to see how much open water was in the main body, should only be a few more days before it is fully capped. My father in the law, being the bait slinger he is, decided to go fish the open water after catching only one fish through the ice. Fish tally for the day: I caught 18, my father in law caught 15, my friend caught 5, my dad caught 2 (kinda hard to catch fish when you are snoring.) Majority of fish were between 10 - 12 inches. Father in law caught one 19 inch rainbow. Will be going back soon.

Sounds like a fun day! Is the state park open for parking and access? How far out past the arm/finger of the dam is ice? From some pics I saw from earlier posts, it looked as if there were several hundred yards of ice out of the arm and along the east shore?

The open water that was left was in the main body directly in front of the finger heading up towards the dam. It was surrounded by ice with the exception of a 50 yard stretch of shore off the hill from the state park. With this cold snap, I would imagine it should be capped by this weekend, but will still be very thin. When we looked out towards the island, it appeared to be completely iced but I have no idea how long that ice had been there. Call me a chicken, but I usually wait until I see other people out there.

I'm with you on the chicken part[
]. Thanks for the info. one more week to be safe I guess, then it should be thick enough for snow machines. WooooHooooo!

I usd a few different things, had good luck with the Maniac cuter bug, white, green, and orange. After a couple hours I had to down size to a rat phinky. I think the most inportant thing is a kastmaster or swidish pimple for a quick drop to get them looking( 6-12 inches above)
