So my buddy wants to ice fish this lake up in Wyoming. Has anyone heard of this lake and what should I expect? What species should I bring gear for?

I have fished it twice now. Once was for an ice fishing derby a few years ago where i caught one fish; it was either a lake trout or a splake, not sure. Then i went another time and caught a rainbow; both fish were about 16-17inches but we had slow days but it was also later in the season....oh and we caught one chub. I think you could do really well on early ice! But the day of the derby we saw some nice fish come out of there( I think the winning fish was like a 30 inch rainbow, i saw it in the cooler and it was huge!) All i know is it can get very windy; i ended up chasing my tent all the way across the ice. Good luck if you go.

Thanks for the quick reply! Yeah this is going to be kinda like a experimental trip. I've heard of the big rainbows that come out of that lake. I'm excited but also optimistic. Reports from our buddy that lives up there say it's pretty hot right now.

Great area to fish------- you should do a little camping in 30 mile 1/2 circle of there during the warmer months and learn the lay of the land-------- you won't be disappointed.

Let's just say, if I were going to fish Wyoming....that would be my choice.

Fished this lake yesterday using tube jigs and meal worms or jigs and crawlers. Caught 1 fish in 3.5 hours. It was a rainbow 17inches. Then took the tube off the jig hook and threw a pink or orange cheese sented mashmellow on tiped with a night crawler. caught the other 5 fish of my limit in about 45 minutes fishing the same holes I had been in most of the morning. was fishing near the dam 8 - 15 ft of water ice was about 6inches in that area. Hope this helps this is my fist post on this site.

That helps a lot!!! thank you for the info and we'll be up there soon to see how we do. I'm guessing the scent was the ticket then. What type of fish are in that lake?

Mainly rainbows with a few splake and a few cuts. That is all I have ever caught up there anyway.

Welcome to the site Wyfisher, thanks for the report. If your from Wy, would you be interested in being in the burbot bash next month? WH2

The splake are shaped like footballs from eating Utah Chubs, which the lake has lots of. Have caught Browns through the ice also. Pretty rare though! I usually don't ice fish until after 1st of the year, because I don't care for looking at the ice from the Australian side of it-Down Under! Lake seems to have allot of planters right now, as most caught are 16-18" fish. A couple of years and these fish will be dandies as they really grow fast of the shrimp in there. Good Luck!

I was planning on giving the burbot bash a try this year I have never fished for them. A lot will depend on the wind as I dont have an ice fishing tent.

I love Lake Viva Naughton, because you never Know what you might catch. It's got it all, Rainbow, Albino Rainbow, Brook, Cutthroat, Brown, Splake & Bass and you never Know what size you might get.
GOOD LUCK [sly]

Given the amount of out of states people (Utah,Colo ,Idaho,) that i see fishing Wyoming waters.I would have to say that, the price of a out of state license , hasn't not detoured to many people.
[signature]
True, but they are probably originals, or just buying day passes. That is a recent price isn't it? I know Idaho's $96. was the middle of 2009.

These prices are right out of the Wyo g/f web site. FISH Nonresident Annual $92

FISH Nonresident Daily $14
As for originals or one dayer's,yes they will be either one or the other. But I really don't understand, the jest of your original post about the cost of a out of state licence. Or are you just complaining, because the residents of Wyo dont pay as much as non-residents?

OMG, it wasn't a big deal.
Just made a comment about the year pass, only because ours is almost HALF that for non resident.
