I am planning a trip out to the west desert next week. Any advice on fishing Blue lake or the surrounding lakes? Also any information on camping out there would be greatly appreciated. I will be fishing from a float tube. thanks for any info you can send my way.

Pack a handgun and anything that catches tillapia (sp?). Finesse fishing is the trick, light line with a small piece of crawler or black colored fly seems to do it...don't forget the pistol and your warm sleeping bag and pistol.

P.S. Seriously, there are some crazies out that way, bring protection.

You forgot to mention to him to bring his pistol.......lol
A shotgun should be sufficient as well.

By crazies what do you mean? Have you yourself had anything to happen to you?

I gotta tell you this. Believe what you're told! If you had any of the clowns that frequent that place for a friend - you damn sure wouldn't need any enemies.

i was out there about a month ago and did very well catching at least 50 fish. we were using small jigs with crawlers like before mentioned. we were using too heavy a line, jigs and too big a piece of worm. we should have caught more. TD suggested smaller jigs and small pieces of crawler. he also said frozen peas work. you can search my earlier post for a more info.
We experienced no "issues" out there but fished during the day and did not stay overnight. we also fished the "bluegill" pond which you can park right next to the pond. i think most people have problems with car vandilizum at blue lake in which you cannot see the vehicle parking area from the lake.
the road is in bad shape with lots of ruts. If you need a fishing partner let me know but i would have to go on sunday due to saturday plans.
good luck otherwise!

Ever seen that movie the hills have eyes. That is what this post is starting to remind me of...... I have had some crazy stuff happen to me out at some other bass ponds in the west desert that direction. Someone was shooting in at us from the darkness while we were sitting around the fire. I know I heard a gun shot and a bullet ricochet. It wasnt the beer I promise.

I also had another time, same place same time of the night(late) we had a guy in full camo(face painted too), night vision and a sniper rifle. I was not sure what to think. He walked up to us at the fire and asked us if we were staying the night. It was creepy. I know he was not an officer, I checked for badges or anything like that and nothing. At first I thought we were in trouble. when we realized he was not we figured he was hunting rabbits or coyotes but he never did say. We might have scared him a little. We shot up a storm not too long before he showed up. Maybe he was checking to see what all the chaos was. This was about 10 years ago when I was a teenager.

I agree about taking weapons with you, but I always have a gun in my truck so........

I have been to Blue Lake a few times and never had a problem.
I sincerely doubt retrable dive companies would take their clients out there if it was a scene straight out of Deliverance.

[cool] [#0000ff]I am guessing that you probably went on a weekend or when others were around. [/#0000ff][#0000ff]The worst cases of vandalism and car burglaries happen during the week, when solo vehicles or only two or three are left unattended in the remote parking lot where they cannot be seen from the main lake. There are groups of the "labor force" from Wendover that carpool out to Blue Lake not only to clean out the fish but also to clean out the vehicles they find left without a guard.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]The dive groups almost always have people who stay behind to watch their vehicles and run off anybody who approaches them. They are the first to warn others not to leave vehicles unguarded.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]I know several anglers who have suffered damage or theft to their vehicles. I also know a couple of guys who chased down the offenders and got revenge. The guys who broke into my buddy's truck were driving a wimpy low slung sedan. The truck was a jacked up offroad machine. As soon as the bad guys were seen fishtailing up the washboard road the truck hauled after them and caught them. They forced the other guys off the road, had a "two handed conversation" with them, recovered their lost gear and then trashed the other car so it was incapable of being driven any further.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Mostly the NGBs (no good bas....) are looking for cash or wallets with credit cards...and they run for Wendover as soon as they find some. They can do some damage on your plastic before you get back to your vehicle. But they also take anything else that is removable...and some things that are not. Lots of yard sales in Wendover.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]If you haven't been out there or experienced the "best" it has to offer, be careful about downplaying the dangers. If you sit in the parking area with a spotting scope or good binoculars you can look up and see more than a few "vultures" hiding in the nearby hills, looking back at you with their binos or scopes...watching for someone to leave their stuff behind when they go to the lake. They can spot where you "hide" that spare key or where you stash your wallet under a seat or whatever. But, if you don't make it easy for them they have slim jims and hammers that are "universal keys" for all vehicles. Most of the time they hit fast and either hide out or run back to town. By the time you have had your fishing or diving fun it is too late.[/#0000ff]
