So saturday I made the drive down from south ogden to my favorite marina. There had been a solid four inches of ice but the wind was blowing directly into the marina. It was about half broke up when I got there. The far corner where I usually do my best fishing had unmolested ice though. It would support me, but I just fished off the dock for safe measure. I dropped my pink sonar jig down and before it hit the bottom the line went slack. I set the hook and was unhooking a 10" whitie. I continued to repeat this process for the next three hours untill the wind finaly drove me off the lake. It is always best this time of year but I have never seen it as good as it was on saturday. I literaly caught hundreds. At one point I caught three at once on the two treble hook lure. Several time I caught two at once. It was cold so I eventually took the sonar jig off my line and used a barbless 1/8 once glow jig head so they would be easier to unhook. It worked as well but the fish were harder to hook with it.

Wow, great report, thanks for sharing. Did you catch any larger than 10"?

I keep hearing about these sonar jigs. Are they really that great? they seem ok but it seems like it may limit the species you catch on a given body of water. Any luck with trout using those? or do you just target the white bass @ Utah lake? Great report and good on ya for gettin into those buggers.

Never heard of them?? Where do you get them?

Never caught any much bigger than 10 or 11 but I didn't have a tape. They were all around the same size though. Sportsmans carries the sonar jigs. Heddon makes them. They are right below the heddon zara spook topwater baits. I know a few other companies make them calling them buzz baits. Sportsmans sells one of the cheap nockoffs in a 5 pack but I have never tried them.
As far as limiting fish you catch I have caught blugill crappie largmouth walleye and perch on them at utah lake through the ice. This trip was the first time I haven't caught multilpe species. Probably because there were so many whities around. However if you are catching panfish on them something smaller tipped with a worm will catch more. I have never tried them for trout. When the wipers are starting to get active in the spring I have had awsome days with them ripping them as hard and fast as I can. Must cause a reaction strike or something.

[cool][#0000ff]They are generically known as "blade baits". I have the mold and make them too. They catch just about everything if fished right.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]I used the larger sizes last year on Yuba to help keep the smaller perch away. Still caught some small ones but caught lots of bigger ones on the glow pale perch and fire tiger too.[/#0000ff]

[cool]Thanks for the report. With the cold temps the rest of the week, those harbors should freeze up good... I'd love to get some whities through the ice soon...

Nice report! Any walleyes? I was down there Sunday night at provo harbor around 12:00 am. I went outside on the dike and found it had started to freeze. I was fishing for walleye but had no luck. I fished for a hour in the snowy blizzard and decided to leave. Kinda a bit spooky to see fresh cougar tracks going out on the dike and no tracks, that I could find, going back out of the dike. I had my 40 cal on me that I usually take when I go in the middle of the night by myself. I don't have any experience fishing walleye in the winter at UT. lake but I fish alot for them in the fall/spring/summer. Any pointers? I might try and go out tomorrow.
