Has anyone fished this stretch of river? I went out last friday just to look it over. I was interested in floating this stretch in about 5 mile sections this next spring. The private land there make that all but impossible.
It looks shallow from the bank. I am also thinking that that current might be very fast in the spring.
What I am asking is has anyone had any experience there? Thanks Ron

The current is not much faster than it is now. It would probably take you all do to do that float. The trout fishing wouldn't be that great but you could get into smallmouth bass. Also if you want alot of fun take a bow setup for carp. Bow hunting for carp is a blast.

Actually I am thinking more in the lines of a two day trip One day from the dam ramp to the baseline road ramp. Then from the baseline road ramp to the park at the golf course. Ron

It doesn't move real fast except for the first mile below the dam. there is also a place to take out where Jackson bridge use to be on the west side of the river. then baseline road. there is a company that drops off rafters and tubers at the dam and pick them up at baseline. takes the better part of the day I would guess you could get to the freeway bridge in a day but it would be a long one. lot of bass and trout along the way. the first few miles below the dam i have had the best luck drifting a fresh minnow. if that isn't possible drift a night crawler put on with a worm needle and about 18 inch leader. bass in that section love grubs fished Texas rig. olive pumpkin seed and grey metallic seem to be popular.
There aren't a lot of deep spots in the river but the channel seems to stay close to the middle or the right side of the river as your facing down stream. always keep the island to your left and you will find the deepest water.
there are suckers carp tout and whitefish in that section along with small mouth bass and sturgeon
watch out for wind on the section from frenchman's island down stream to burley much wind from the west and it wont be float able. If you decide to do this pm me your cell number and i will give you mine just in case you have any problems why your out on the river
kurt

Oh and i agree on the bowfishing we go out all the time do a lot of night hunts see a lot more people taking it up

I checked out the Jackson bridge area. On the road that comes in from the west The road is closed at that last house. About 100 yards? from the bank. I looked over the bank in that area real good but never saw a place to take out that was real good. I came in from the south and the road is closed a LONG way before the bridge. The Baseline take out looked real good. I didn't know that a guide helped people float that area.
Using a minnow is perfect for me. That and cut bait is what I mostly use. I am surprised that there are trout there. The F&G hasn't planted trout there in a long time.
Sturgeon well I would not have figured that. Have you ever seen any cats caught in that stretch? I was told that a few guys were catching cats between the put in and about 1 mile down stream.
Thanks for the offer to give a hand I will do that. Maybe you might want to join us on a trip? I have been fishing the stretch between the Burley bridge and the restaurant with the dock (Dry Dock) I got a few cats and a lot of bass but never any good sized cats. I am kind of hoping that that upper stretch will have some cats in there in the spring early summer. Do you know of anyone that has had any luck on cats? Ron

The take out isn't real good its about a block from the little house on the east side of the river on the dead end road. there are a few wild trout in there but most of them are washouts from above the dam same with the sturgeon. they come threw the radial gates later in the year. fish and game has also planted trout with tags in there jaw some are worth money. they put them in down by burley but they migrate upstream. I have only caught one cat up there below the dam it was on the north side of the river a block below the last set of rapids it was about 7 lbs. caught it while drifting a minnow for trout.
I worked up there at the dam for 4 years and seen a lot of fish caught.
milner is the place to catfish. at 5 mile corner there is a runoff ditch from the canal that dumps back into the river on the south side . fish a minnow there and you can take home a lot of cats from 7 to 15 pounds. all of the fish below were caught in the mouth of that ditch. Its only accessible by the river and is about 6 foot wide you would never think these fish were there. I haven't cat fished in a long time but My buddy's still fish out there and they did really good last year. I might take you up on your offer it sounds fun

CE, did you fish this section of the river?

Up by the dam so after re-reading your original post this might be off-topic. Didn't mean to hijack a thread, just saying thanks. I had almost given up on milner.

Don't worry about hijacking. Were you fishing from the bank by the dam? The only place I have not fished milner is from muskrat bend to the dam. I guess I need to try down by the dam. Did you get any pic's of the cat? Ron

Yes on the road next to the canal. 20 minutes in, i luckily set the hook on my very first c-cat! I have a couple pics but no SD card to get em off my phone. I'll get em uploaded once I do. It seemed like a good spot to fish, we saw lots of activity and got a few more bites.

So you were on the north side? If I get my antelope hunting done we should take some pontoons over and see if we can put the hurt on them. Do you have any waders? Ron

CE were you up below the Minidoka dam or were you on Milner Res. near the dam? Thanks

Directly south of the dam, on the last canal, 30 feet out on the northwest corner of the bridge. I don't pontoon or I'd join ya, however, this portion of the canal has a swift current. I don't think it would be wise to do it but it could be fun haha
