i have been waiting awhile to get back on fish lake's ice.. so made my way down there today..the road going in from the main road had not been plowed yet by the time we got there, so we were plowing through 2 foot drifts just to get to the lake.. good start.lol got there and hound 6 to 8 inchs of snow on the ice. powerd snow. made it realy hard to pull the sleds out.. got out to the mac fishing hole got set up and first drop i could not get the jig past 20 feet before a splake was on it.. that went on for awhile.. so i put a bigger jig on.. finley got it past the splake and down to the bottom.. well after that did not take loge for the first mack to hit, a small pup of about 4 lbs.. then some more splake moved in and played with them for awhile.. then they moved out and i cought 1 more mac of about 6 lbs.. that was it for the mac's the rest of the day. plenty of splakes and bow's to play with tho.. all the fish were caoght on one of coldfooter costom tube jig's tipped with meat.. fishing was good tell about 2:30 then just went down.. called it a day at 4:00.. next time i go tho i'll take my snowmobile!!! lot's of snow on the ice made it a hard walk out.. the ice is at lest 8 inch's in the area we fished today..

yeah them damn spooks are working just as good this year as last.. maybe even better..lol had to put the bigger ones on yesterday to keep the small splake off it.. ya headed out anytime soon? let me know if you do..

most the splak we caught were small but did hit some that were 17 to 18 inchs.. the bow's were the same.. we could have caught all we wanted all day! just fish 15 to 30 feet deep and jig fast.. most the time with the small jig's i could not get them down more then 20 feet before a pick up..

thanks for the report. I have never fished down there before and would like to go down but have no clue where to go or what to use for Macs. Any advice would be helpful. Thanks

well the best advice i can give for the mac's at fish lake is find 60 feet of water first.. 55 to 70 will work.. it don't have to be exatley 60 feet. but in that area is where i try and stay.. and some will say they catch them in shalower and i'm sure they do just not as often.. most trips i catch at lest 1 or 2 pup mac.. some trips i have caught up 10 mac's other trips not-a one.. that the way it go's down there.. after finding 60 feet of water i use costom jig's hand made in every way.. Don (coldfooter here on BFT) makes the tubs him self. i make the jig heads and set them up by hand my self.. and i will not give out the how's and what's on the open form.. sorry..
the next best thing i can till ya is get some 4 to 5 inch pearl tube jig's use a 1/2 oz jig head.. a good fish finder is needed as well.. ya got to see what the fish are doing and when they are coming up to look at the jig.. when mac fishing i move the jig slow no fast jerky jiging like i do for splake and tigers.. most the time the hit is light more like a bonk on the jig you have very little time to set the hook and set it hard! they have hard mouths and ya must have good sharp hooks and set them hard.. stay close to the bottom. mac's stay close to the bottom most the time.. the fish ya see up higher are splake.. tip the jig with some meat. perch, chub, sucker and shiner's can all be used.. try and find out what is working best for ya.. i have caught them on all 4..
