Have you tried Western rivers or Fish tech. ? Hen dles are not as popular as they were years ago.

Not that anything has really replaced it, just that the larger soft hackle flies of the past have lost favor among the younger generation. So there is less call for fly shops to stock it. Small soft hackle flies have gained favor and Bramah hen capes and starling has been gaining ground.

Absolutely HFT.
I like CDL myself. I love the color contrast but the hen hackle and Partridge are right up there.
I use the Starling on the 18's and smaller.
I still like the larger Soft Hackles like the late great Jack Gartside's softhackle leech with marabou. Probably my first go to fly on stillwater.
So many combinations, but Brown/Olive, Red/Black, Black/Purple, Yellow/Brown and favorite is Burnt Orange and Black.
Easy ties to.

and it calls for hen dle, that is why i was asking. But i want it small for sure. 20 and smaller.
So would partridge or some of the other mentioned like starling work for this??

Partridge MAYBE if your lucky or you do the tie it in at the bend. then make the body then pull it back.
Pm me an address and I will send you some starling. No way I am ever going to use all I have.

20 and smaller I would deffinatly look into getting a Brahma Hen cape by Hoffman.
you may have to have a shop special order it for you but they are awsome for that size
soft hackles.color will be just a little different tan/ black as opposed to white/black.
Partridge is difficult to find feathers that you can tie that small.
Starling will work good but no varrigation in color, just goes from dark grey at base
to light grey at tip.

Plastic bead first- tie in feather with 1 or 2 turns of the thread directly behind the bead then slowly pull the feather down to the length you need. Then any sized feather works.
