BEST FRESHWATER LAKE IN NORTH AMERICA: With all these lakes in North America and multi species of fish..... If you had lake/stream to choose from which one would it be??? Lets break down the freshwater species down to Smallmouth, Largemouth, Trout and Musky species only..... Kentucky Lake to me is the best Largemouth fishery in the United States to me.... If you want to have absolute blast and catch many fish with different sizes then you need to travel to Kentucky lake.... Through out Spring many Largemouth over 8 lbs are caught on different methods: Texas Rig, Shaky head, swim bait, carolina rig and drop shot....

LAKE ERIE HAS SOME GIGANTIC SMALLMOUTH:
My father and I were talking about how big the smallmouth are in Lake Erie.... Many anglers from Ohio adventure up there on the Canada side of the lake to hook into 7 & 8 lb smallmouth.... Most use Softshell crawdads or stick with tubes for artificial.... Catching 50 smallmouth an day is nothing up there, it sure will make you spoiled.... Guy down the road from my fathers, which owns bait store caught smallmouth that weighed 7lb 12 oz.... You sure are lucky to have such great lake nearby.... Underwater stucture such as rock piles seem to be the ticket for most anglers fishing up there.... Certainly a different type of lake than what I'm use to fishing here in Tennessee...

I've fished Kentucky Lake many times. Last time out for spring crappie we nailed a bunch of big yellow perch...and some crappie and gils. Time before that, we anchored near the dam and caught some nice cats. Another time we snagged some stripers below the dam. Over the years, I've cast jigs, cranks and worms and caught some nice bass near Big Bear, Little Bear and around Jonathan Creek. But I'm from the shores of Lake Erie so there's a little built-in prejudice. I really never felt challenged on Kentucky Lake. You can go just about anywhere on that lake and catch fish. That's a testament to KY's Natural Resources department. Lake Erie's different because of its size. It's choppy one day and flat as a table top the next. Head out the Vermilion River and you quickly realize that "hell, this is a big place. Where do I go to catch fish?" There-in is the challenge. But when you find the walleyes, smallies, perch, white bass, steelhead and Northerns you generally hit the jackpot on size. As Forest Gump always says, "and that's all I have to say about that."

Yes there are a whole lot of smallies up there! 50 per day is not a very good day in the spring during the pre-spawn. last year we hit it perfect. We got up there about 1 or 2 days before the fish went on their beds and we destroyed them. between me and my dad we got well over 200 smallies in a day and a half. thats not to mention all the huge rockbass and monster bluegills that we were catching. i don't think we landed a smallie under 15 inches up there this year. we got a bunch in the 18 to 20 inch range. i cant wait for May. my boat is already ready to go lol, how bad is that!
