[#002850]Bait_Caster and I have been wanting to do some ice fishing on the Berry this year. So, on the spur of the moment, we decided to go down today. We left pretty early and were the first ones to at the marina.
Having had some very bad (even life threatening) experiences on that body of water, we were a bit apprehensive about the trip.
The whole lake is covered with ice and today there was absolutely no slush monster at all. We snowmobiled out to one of our favorite spots (about a 15 minute ride S-E of the marina) and drilled holes in 28-30 feet of water. There was about 6 inches of tight dry snow on top of 9 good clear inches of ice. Very nice. BC and I had nothing to worry about as far as easy safe traveling. Wish all of our trips out there were like that.
The wind was blowing pretty good in the morning. Glad I brought screw downs for my tent today. Later on there was no wind and lots of sun.
For us, the fishing was pretty slow today. First of all, we fished in too deep of water (45 feet). Once we moved to the 28-30 area, we got into the fish much better. But by then the morning fish rush hour had pretty much subsided. We only caught about 10 fish before leaving just after 12 noon. None of the fish we caught were over the slot size.[/#002850]

BC brought his Aqua-View underwater camera. It was a hoot watching those fish. Personally, I think they are getting smarter. They are very careful to taste test our offerings before committing to a bite. Many many times they would just barely nose our lures and then turn the other way. Frustrating!
What I would like to do someday is go up in the afternoon, set up camp, fish all night (in between naps) and be actively fishing in the early morning hours. The early morning hours always seem to have more active fish come through. Then they just seem to disappear for the most part around 11:00.[/#002850]
