I headed up to montana to try my luck at catching a Ling on saturday. The wind was blowing pretty good and the ice was all bare and slick.

I got to try out my new ice shanty I bought from Windriver, it worked great! The wind blew it around a little bit but once I moved and found a little snow to put around the bottom, it worked like a charm. I did have a brace that snaps to the top come off and ploop right in the hole. I finally got it fished back out useing my ice scoop and a bit of rope as a lasso. That kept me entertained for about an hour [Smile].

I didn't have any luck catching fish but had a pretty good time and learned a little about the lake. Most of the locals I talked to were friendly and good about giving advice. The south end has been having the best luck but the bite had slowed down the last few days. Everyone I talked to said it was a slow day. One older fellow said he had caught 3 all day.

There are shantys all over the place, and pick-ups and 4-wheelers moving them back and forth. The ice was about 18-20 inches thick. I was going to drive my truck across the ice but I wussed out, I just don't trust my luck. I hope to head back up there and give it one more try.

Thanks for the update. I have been wondering how things have been going up there. Sounds about the same as around here.

Glad to hear things went ok with your new ice house. That must have been some wind to blow the brace off the top.

I have been very interested in learning about clark canyon. I have just been afraid to make the voyage because I have heard it is a very hard lake to learn.

You can figure it all out and then tell me all the tricks.[Wink]

Thanks for the report.

Thanks for the report! You can easily stop your tent from moving around. Simply attach some cords with a bungee at the ground end of each cord. I have a Frabil that I have cords running from the outside top and bottom edges that with the bungees come together at one point 6' behind the tent. I carry a cordless electric drill to tap a hole in the ice and screw in an eye hook. Then I let the wind settle the tent where it want to move it to. I go inside and mark where I want my holes, I only have about 18" that isn't inside the sled where my seats are. I move the tent to the side drill my holes and move the tent back over the holes. I'm good to go and it has worked in winds up to 50 MHP. The bungees allow for those Ginormous gusts that would rip up the connectors on the tent without some kind of give. Hope this helps the next time you fish out in the gale conditions!

That sounds like a good idea MMdon. I will try to get something put together before the weekend.

If I can figure the lake out I will be glad to tell ya what I know Windriver [Wink].

The Burbot are pretty easy. They are right off the face of the dam. [Image: bobwink.gif]

The trout areas are familiar to most of the trollers. Working the areas off of the cliffs and the back side of the island are both good producers. The old Red Rock Channel is great fishing as well.
