Anyone ever seen or tried one of these. I order one today. Hopefully I'll like it, but for $30, how can you go wrong.

It would be cool if it does deliver, but not break the bank.
Let us know how it works!

Okay, so the fish finder came in. I tried it out last week with fearnofish1996 at Sportsmans Park/AF. I thought that it was a pretty good deal for $30. It wasn't the best fish finder I have used, but for the money, I liked it. It saw fish when we were getting bites and gave us a lot of confidence.

As far as using it to see through the ice without drilling, that didn't seem to work........

Well that does look like a neat little fish finder. Can't beat that price! I am the young guy that came over and talked to you guys last Saturday at AF. It was nice to meet you guys and share fishing reports. Hope to see you guys out on the ice again soon. Good fishing.

Yeah, it was good meeting you as well. Welcome to the forum. You should post some of those pics of the fish from Walcott.

Did you try squirting water down on the ice or around the transducer when you were looking thru the ice? I fill a water bottle with salt water and this works like a champ..

I piled up a "bowl" of slush around it, then filled the bowl with water. The water was draining away, so maybe that's why it didn't work. There were also a lot of air bubbles in the ice. I thought it didn't work because of the air bubbles.

The air bubbles in the ice will stop you from getting a good return.
Try it on good ice and I will bet you will be happy.

So I have never used a fish finder before. I have a canoe and little electric motor for trolling. I would like to know if I should invest in your 30 dollar finder. Does the gizmo indicate the depth of the water? Would it work well for trolling?

Can it mount to the boat? I noticed there are three parts to it....Can you tell me how it is rigged and which part is underwater?

Thanks.

It does give you the depth of the water, but not the depth of the fish. It has a weird system for showing the fish and I am not sure it works as described in the instructions, but when it was showing fish on the bottom, we were getting bites.

Can't mount it to a boat easily, but according to the instructions it would work just fine in a canoe. Just put the transducer in a plastic bag of water with a twist-tie around the wires and let it see through the bottom of the boat. The instructions show how to do it. It think it should work.

As for trolling, I don't know. It is primarily designed to look down. I guess it should show fish as you pass over them. For $30 how can you go wrong.

Do you have a different finder? I think I might scrape up some bucks to go buy the kind that look this:

Any advice? I've never used one before. All I know is that the cabelas ad says it is good for small fishing boats. I've seen people pivot it on the hinge to pull it out of the water when they are about to go fast in the boat. Can you use a finder like this at trolling speeds to help you locate schools of Kokanee?

I don't have any other, but I have used others. Nothing I'd highly recommend.

My friend bought one of these from Cabelas last winter and took it back after only 1 use. He wasn't impressed at all.

Browningsilver,

This is the finder I use in my canoe. it is nothing fancy but it does the job. The it is easy to mount too. I have never had the transducer fall off the canoe with speed from a trolling motor.

You might try looking at the float tubing forum. Tube Dude and others have some creative ways to mount sonar units on float tubes and pontoon boats. You might be able to come up with some thing similar for your situation.

Here is one example:

Or just use the search feature and look for "sonar" in the float tubing forum.

I decided to give one of these a try. Took it up to Ririe Saturday and it wouldn't read anything. I fiddled around with it for a while and couldn't get it to work at all. Finally had enough of it and tossed it in the sled, about an hour later decided to try it again. It finally would read the water depth but it constantly said there where fish everywhere all the time (which there wasn't). I wouldn't recommend getting this, its really cheap and made in China, now we'll see if I can get my money back. I would recommend the portable humingbird (around $100) I've had mine for three years and it works great. I've used it trolling, ice fishing, and even in a float tube, has never failed me.

For any of you that want a fishfinder and say you cannot afford it, I would recommend doing what I did. I compromised with my wife and told her that if I bought one she would not get me any presents for a year and a half....no christmas, father's day, birthday, valentines, or anniversary - nothing! So on that condition I went the same day and bought the one I wanted. I fully intend on keeping my end of the deal....I think it was worth it.
