Full Version: Scent use - Twn Lakes

My wife had to work today so I went to Twin Lakes to waste some time. I dug a couple of holes and was fishing in 14 feet of water, it was snowing so I put the tent up and turned on the heat. The water was clear enough that I could see my bait. It kinda made me upset, because I could see the fish come right up to the bait and leave like there was no tomorrow, it didn't matter if the bait was being moved or just sitting there.
When my wife goes she baits her own hooks, and from my standpoint doesn't do that good of a job. Hooks showing using worms that are ripped to shreds, stuff like that, but she will consistently outfish me.
Do you guys or gals use anything to cover your scent and if so, what would you recommend?

For covering scent I've used pro bait scent, smelly jelly and some other stuff. Either way I find that a half shredded worm catches a lot of fish. I've learned that if I can half way cover a hook w/ what I refer to as worm burger after a crawler has been hit a few times I seem to catch a lot of fish that way. Maybe it's because it doesn't look like it was prepared that they are more willing to hit. Try your wifes method next time. I do believe we over think the process most the time. Like turkey or goose calling. I repeatedly hear, none of those birds would ever win a calling competition for their species. Maybe for fish they would never win a food tasting competition either?

I have had the same issue with the wife mangling a worm and then out fishing me. Also rotton decomposing worms work great if you can get them on the hook. If you are worried about scent, try a little smelly jelly or even WD40. For perch fishing I hate the new worm when you fish put it on. It is slow catching the first fish. After it is mangled a bit, the catch rate increases quite a bit. The worst part is when the mangled worm finally falls off and you have to start with a new piece of worm. Think out of the box and you might be surprised. I know it is hard to go against everything you have ever been taught, but women do it all the time and usually out fish us.

I rip the heads off of my meal worms. The fish are interested in the sent not the way it looks. I change my mealworms often because it is like putting on a new scent packet every time.

It can be messy but I dip my bait in cod-liver oil. It smells and I recommend not getting it on your clothes.

Thanks for the advise. I will try to imitate my wife more. If I really had to catch fish every time I went I would have quit a long time ago. LOL[Image: happy.gif]
