I saw on the news about 10 days ago somebody I believe in the vicinity of AF boat harbor was duck hunting. His dog chased a bird into some soft water. The dog got stuck, The hunter went in after the dog and couldn't get out until search and rescue came. I don't think he actually fell through the ice. Maybe there was another instance that I haven't heard about.

Here's a link to the Daily Herald article:

I was out at the pump house area this morning testing my new Humminbird 565 ice setup. The ice is still safe there even if it doesn't look like it. With the warmer temps though, there was some slush along the shore.

With it being the first time out with it and the first time ever with a sonar/flasher of any kind for me, I enjoyed fishing with the 565. It came in handy when I was able to see that a big gill was at 6.5ft when everything else, including my jig was at 9ft. I lifted my rod, jigged a bit, and that was that. It didn't work every time, but it was nice not to fish completely in the dark.
If you are like me, I read what TubeDude uses and figured that if it was good enough for him, it was good enough for me. I followed his post on how to rig it up for the ice:

Mine doesn't look as good, but it does the job. I like the dual beams and the RTS window. As for the manual, it did look complicated, but once I had the 565 in the water and working, everything made sense.

I have a 565 that I have been using for a few years now and they are real easy to set up and use. I haven't had any compliants with mine. It's awesome to see fish above or below your jig come running after it when you move it. It can get a little confusing trying ti pick out everything when you have 2 poles with 2 jigs on each one, but you can do it. I like being able to tell which jig the fish is going after as well.
