[indent][/indent]I have been fly fishing for over a year now with a pole that was given to me 8 years ago when I was a little kid. I think its from wal-mart or something [sly]. Anyway I have really caught the fly fishing bug and I now am tying my own flies, and hitting up the rivers every chance I get. I need a new rod, reel,& much better line than I have been using. So my question is what weight rod and length do I need. I will only have one for right now. I know alot of people use multiple and some day I will to but for now only one is in the cards. I fish the weber 90% of the time nymphing 90% of the time and dry the other 10%. Never use streamers for some reason. "Don't know how I guess, or my set-up wasn't quite good enough." I have looked at the sage Launch series 5wt 9ft 4-piece rod. Red truck has it going for $147.00 Is that a good rod to go with or no? also reel and what is the line to have? Sorry for all the questions. Thanks in advance.

9 foot, 5 weight with a decent reel also ( i have the same RLS on the rod i teach my friends to fly fish with).
as for line, i still love my Shark Skin, but i couldent justify telling someone else to drop 100 bucks on fly line, you can find stuff just as good for 55 bucks if you know which taper you want to use and such.

Thanks for the quick reply. As far as shark skin line does the color matter. Should I get the weight forward line? I never really fish stillwater so I dont worry to mush about sinking line.

for the GPX shark skin, which is what i use, i think you can really only get one color. i wiould suggest a different line though, like RIO Gold, or RIO Trout, dont spend the 100 bucks if you dont have to. Double Taper is cool cause you can turn the line around and use the other end, but ive never had a desire to use it... as far as weight forward or not, again thats personal preferance

I have a launch and love it... that rod is being discontinued and that 150 price is a great one.. when I bought mine a few years back it was 225 ... I coupled it with an orvis rocky mountain turbine reel that you can buy extra spools for (for quick change out of lines if needed)... if the SS is a little too steep in price for you, you may want to look at the rio grand.. great line..

Thanks for being straight forward and helping me save a few bucks. I really do appreciate all of the help.

I looked on the orvis site looking for that reel and all that came up in the search was the extra spools. "great price on those by the way." where can I track down the reel?

go check out sportsmans, they will be marking down gear from last yr. i hope this will at least help u save a buck or 2

I am running over right now to have a look at what they have going right now. I just ordered the sage launch 9ft 5wt rod, now just need the reel and line.

Hey,
I have the Launch in 9ft 5wt. I use the 5wt floating sharkskin, with a Prestige reel from Cabela's. Leader is either a 6x fluoroflex from Rio or one of FlyGoddess braded
leaders. I just love this set up and will not fish much else. This really works for me. Indicators are usually Thingamobbers. Hope this helps.

Sage Launch is an EXCELLENT choice.
As far as line, check e-bay like this one:
http://cgi.ebay.com/RIO-Selective-Trout-...25583a27e1
I also really like Ridgeline, Rio Windcutter II
Reel, there is allot of inexpensive choices and just remember the reel is not that important, but a fair drag is nice.

Lamson Konic is not terribly expensive, and i love their cassete/brake/clutch drag they have on them

the last time I checked the orvis site they still had the reels.. like a few weeks ago.. I usually go into the reels section instead of searching.. if that doesnt turn up anything I am not sure except maybe check on line search or ebay... I hope they are not getting rid of that reel.. it is an awesome setup for a beginner like me...

Thanks for everyones quick replies. hopefully the rod should be here in the next 2 days and I should be set up. I'm excited to get back on the river and get off the ice. I use to think that ice fishing was the greatest thing ever. Now I don't think it is in the same ballpark with catching them on the fly. I have been tying flys for about 2 months now and i'm hoping I can get out and catch my first fish on the new set-up and some of my own hand tied flies[
].

You know me, Orvis girl. But anymore, you buy the stuff sight unseen. I know you did, but I was there to tell you about them and as Koch mentioned, Konic wasn't here yet.
One way to look at it....Rocky Mountain = Chinese
Konic, part made in USA, and other part overseas, BUT assembled in Boise Idaho...wohoo Jobs for the US.
Sorry mac, you do have a killer reel though.

Hopefully we will meet up on the river. I don't know though, everytime I try to meet up with Koch, he is gong to Idaho or something MACHO.[laugh]

all I know is you recommended it to me and I love it.. Ive beat it up a little being clumsy and it is still as smooth as the day I first got it.. change out of spools is slick and easy.. its smooth running... and as you said the price is right.. but..
why is orvis not listing it like they used to.. why are only the spools showing up on a search on the site?? is it being discontinued?? just curious..

I think it is being discontinued. I don't know what will take it's place.
Get a bunch of spools if you can!....
If nothing else, people will be wanting them when they are no longer around.
[signature]
Well hopefully sometime we can make that a reality and catch a fish or two. I really do appreciate everyones input and advice. See you all on the river!

there are two reels near in price to the rmt listed on the site.. maybe they figure they have too many in that price range.. who knows.. I have a few extra spools even after loading up two or three other linesn like the dt and the rio grand.. I may have to see if I can pick up a few more just in case.... :-)
