Governor Bobby Jindal's most recent appointments to the Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Commission (LWFC) fill positions on the seven person policy-making body for the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries.
Michael C. Voisin, of Houma, replaced outgoing LWFC Chairman Robert J. Samanie, III at the January 2010 commission meeting and will be the shrimp and coastal representative on the commission. He has owned Motivatit Seafoods, Inc., based in Houma since 1971.
Ronald Graham, of Ruston, was an at-large appointment in July of 2009, replacing Frederic L. Miller who passed away in June. Graham is currently the chairman of the board of Lincoln Builders, Inc.
Voisin's affiliations with conservation organizations include the Louisiana Oyster Dealers and Growers Association, Gulf and South Atlantic Fisheries Foundation, Southeastern Fisheries Association, Louisiana Seafood Processors Council and Gulf Oyster Industry Council and the Louisiana Oyster Task Force. His LWFC term will run until December 2015.
"Management of Louisiana's wildlife and fisheries resources are critical to the economic and cultural heritage that is Louisiana," Voisin said. "I hope that I can look back after my term and say that I and my fellow commissioners left the fish and wildlife resources of our great state sustainable for future generations."
Graham has served on the conservation programs committee for Ducks Unlimited and was chairman for the Lincoln Parish Ducks Unlimited chapter. He will serve the remaining portion of Mr. Miller's LWFC term which runs through December 2010.
"Our job as wildlife and fisheries commissioners is of crucial importance for the oversight and reinforcement of the abundant natural resources our great state has been blessed with," said Graham. "To protect our wealth and resources for fishing and hunting - both recreational and commercial - it is critical that we provide professional biologists and staff to monitor the effect of our ever changing environment, and educate the public on responsible stewardship of our environment for the benefit of all citizens and guests."
The LWFC was created to protect, conserve and replenish the natural resources and wildlife of the state, including all aquatic life. The commission sets all hunting, fishing and trapping seasons statewide; and establishes all regulations for the conservation of fish and wildlife and its habitat. According to the statute, the commission is comprised of seven members appointed by the governor, subject to senate confirmation.
