Hey just wanted to let those of you that know me well to know that I finally got accepted to western university school of dental medicine in Pomona, Ca. I am on a couple of other wait lists but will probably accept the offer there. If anyone has any fishing advice for the area or any advice on good places to live please feel free to comment. Thanks for any advice or comments in advance. My 4 year old is way excited because as he puts it "we can go catch crabs". I have taken him crabbing off the warf a couple of times. I am hoping to have some time for fishing on the weekends.

i'm in the same boat--moved down to LA in august to go to med school at USC. don't know if you're in to fly fishing at all, but there are some fun creeks around here. but for most of them you have to get used to the idea that a 10"-12" fish is a "trophy." beautiful fish though, and a good way to spend a day if you ask me. pm if you want more info.

Just wanted to say best of luck on your new adventure. Hope you find some good fishing.

I lived in the Bay area for 6 years, first subscribe to the fish sniffer (kind of a fishing newsletter/mag) you can learn alot about the area from it.The area all arround pamona in the foothills has excellant fishing. there are many lakes and rivers. Near yosemite is good. Over near angels camp and north, you can access the american river if you have 4 wheel drive. Some of the roads in can be very rough. But its geat fishing for good size rainbows. (up to 6-7 lbs) The sierras in that area has some back pack in areas which have a major population of golden trout Fishing boats for ocean fishing leave at nearby montery/ santa cruse /half moon/ salsalito (across the bay from oakland) If you have week end time , about 4 hours north along I-5 near willits /shasta area theres a section of the sacramento river thats managed as a wild trout area. It can be excellant fishing , and very scenic. There is a lake north east of vallejo called lake almador that has great trophy rainbows as well as a land locked some type of king salmon sub spieces that get to 15- 20 lbs.
If bass is your choice, the delta area can produce large stripers (15-50lbs) And clear lake (world known for its trophy large mouth) is only a couple hours away. There is many many opportunities in the bay/foothills area.
if you have questions pm me. Lonnie

Forgot to add, as for places to live , anywhere arround there is nice , Your in the sierra foothills, The area is pines and granite. And that area is more like country living than city living. A fisherman like yourself will enjoy the area. Good Luck

Hey Lonnie, Pomona is in Southern California, not Northern, so he is not in the Seirras or close to the foothills. The places you describe will all be way far away from where he will be at. But if he wants to take the over six hour drive to Northern California, you do describe some good fishing destinations. But there are lots of places closer to where he lives with some good fishing, especially offshore tuna.

You will be close to Irvine lake, huge trout and catfish in there. Obviously the Ocean, I use to go out on 1/2 day's out of Dana point on tuesday for $13 a person. Good fishing for Calico's with an ocasional Halibut or Seabass.
As in places to live, depends on how far you want to drive and what you want to spend on housing. I grew up in So Cal, so if your wondering about a certain area, you can pm me and I will tell you what I know. Mac Tuna spilled the beans about Silverwood, but forgot to mention Diamond Valley Lake, it only opened in 2003 to the public and it's putting out some nice Stripers and Bass. If I lived there again, I would be chaing Bass about 90% of the time.

Diamond Valley wasn't there before I moved to Utah. Puddingstone has good Bass fishing also and it is real close.

My Bad
There is a small town called panoma near yosemite. Califoria has a habit of having more than on place with the same name (Brentwood in LA, brentwood near antioch/ pittsburg, there are 2 oakleys.) I thouht it was curious to have a dental school in the small town I was thinking of. Oh well , make it a 6 to 8 hr drive and my previous post applies, OOOPS!
