Hello all,

It's nice to finally find a place with good information about fishing the Vegas area!

I will be visiting Vegas for the month of March and am looking to fish every weekend. I'm willing to fish anything and everything. I'd like to fish Mead, Mohave, and the Willow Beach area at least once each.

Any recommendations for boat rentals, guides, tackle, rigs, bait used, shore fishing opportunities, etc would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Hello Chris

In March the big Striper bit is still on. The NDOW is still dropping trout. Water still should be cool enough to cast from shore. Big casting rods with 20 pound test and up. Top water or trout imitation lures work just fine. If you are looking for a guide on Mead or down below the dam. Contact either one of these guides. There prices are fair they supply everything except your license. And 98% chance they will get you hooked up. Just ask where your best chance is and they will tell you.

Good luck And let us here your report.

Thanks for the info stripercraze.

What topwater lures do you recommend? I have gear to throw some of the big stuff and plan on bringing some lunker punkers, slammers, thundersticks and hudds. Are there any local favorites?

Chirs S, if you go with americanangler capt Bob gives a guarantee, no fish no pay. The best part is he accepts paypal. Went out with him in August just to see what I didn't know....WOW I was impressed.

Also note he is coast guard certified/CPR and was the president of the Nevada Stripper Club.

Not trying to change the subject, but does anyone know the rainbow stocking schedule for mead and mohave for feb and March? I want to come down for a week or two and would like my trip to coincide with the plants to give me a shot at a big stripper. Thanks

Hello pezvela,

Trout plants on Mead are every friday at three locations. Two on Boulder Beach and one at Crawdad cove. Willow Beach is also every friday morning before they drive up to boulder beach. Down on the river is every tuesday or thursday not for sure. But if you go to NDOW web site they have some stocking info or you can give them a call.
Hope this helps.

Thanks! I'll call the NDOW and plan a trip according to the schedule. I'm thinking of staying at Cottonwood cove and fishing there and upstream at Aztec, maybe as far as willow beach if that is what it takes for a shot at a big one. Lake Powell (hite) is real close to my home, but not much of a chance for a 20 lber so here I come Mohave and its a lot warmer in Feb, March in those southern climes. I APPRECIATE THE INPUT.

This is the number for the stocking info- Its is a message , updated weekly, that gives you the dates, times and locations of all the stockings.

All those lures will work fine for a big fish- we use these alot:

And I am a big fan of soft swimbaits that imitate the stocker trout. Anything from 6 inches up to 12" can get you a decent fish- big baits = big fish.

Thanks for the info everyone.

What about live bait? Are there any local shops that carry it? I could cast net my own, but that would mean buying a cast net to use for 3 weekends.

Right now the only reasonably priced boat rentals I have found is in Echo Bay for $90 a day for a little 15hp 16' V bottom. Not ideal but it will work. Anyone know any better deals? Any good spots near the Echo Bay area?

They have live bait but I think just minnows. They have frozen baits too.

I'm finalizing plans now. Any thoughts about trolling speeds using big swimbaits? Is the river currant a factor around willow beach (if I have to go upriver). Any thoughts will be greatly appreciated.

When I troll, I go SLOOOOOOOWWWWWWWWW.

When I am casting, I use a more erratic retrieve. A pull and stop technique works best for me. Always vary your retrieve until you catch a fish.

Slow it is. Thyanks for the advise. When I finalize my plans I'll let you know. I'll be on the river for a week trying for a big one. Maybe we can get together. Thanks again.

That is a very good resource for our Colorado river water lakes. Wayne is the reason we have small mouth bass in Lake Mead (read about his mishap)

I'm guessing that the tips for Bluegill/Sunfish and bass on Powell will also work on Mead and Mojave?
