Fished Newton today and the Ice conditions are gettin pretty miserable. The road into the very back is drifted over 4ft deep. The access across the field halfway back is thigh deep snow. The entire lake has several inches of slush with about a foot of snow ontop. There is a thin layer of ice ontop of the slush that wouldn't hold my weight so i was punchin through into the slush...miserable walking. The level of the lake has risen quite a bit and with all the snow on the edges it's not freezing up so every spot i went on/off a was greeted with knee-deep water. Hopefully some cold nights will freeze those edges back up it's too early to deal with soft edges.

The fishing was very slow everwhere i tried, had an unusually hard time even marking fish. I picked up a few mid-size perch and a pretty nice bass...really slow for newton. Fished everywhere from 7 to 42 ft of water.

I was up there on Saturday and didn't even see a fish. I fished across from the parking area to the dam and half-way back across. You are right the slush was miserable. I guess a good aerobic work-out was had.

I have had really bad luck with newton this year. I've only fished it twice, but both times I drilled over 20 holes in varying depths and locations without getting more than a nibble.

It's usually pretty good for the perch, but I have had a rough time with it this year. Makes me wonder if there has been a winter kill or something going on.

It wouldn't make sense to me for it to be a winter kill because right at first ice on i was having a much harder time than last year. I have found the perch and crappie a couple time but nothing like the last few years...i dunno if numbers have been crashing throughout the year this year or if they are just really stubborn and hard to find this year. oh well that's fishing i guess haha
