Short: water temp - 70 degrees. Location - point off rabbit Gultch. Time of day - 9:00a.m. to 1:30p.m. Lure/Bait - 1/8-1/4oz. lead jigs in orange to gold color tipped with a crawler. Method - Cast along/towards the shore and retreived at a steady, slow pace. Totals - 9 Walleye ranging in size from 9-14 inches went home for dinner. 1 Smallmouth about 13-14 inches released.

Long: I finally got back out on the water after 2 months. I took my girlfriends brother out to catch his first Walleye. I didn't know that it was the weekend of the Utah Walleye Circuit's Tournament. The fish had been pounded on for about a week, fishing was tough. We settled in on the point at Rabbit Gultch around 9:00 a.m. Water temps were near 70. I talked to the couple in the boat by us and they let me know about the tournament and that they were in second place with 6 fish weighed at 6lbs for the first day. I saw the pair boat 4 small Walleye and then they left the area.

we had been fishing the usual colors (white, glow, chartreuse, pink) and had only managed 2 walleye and 1 decent Smallmouth. Before the guy next to us left, he said that he was using a glow/orange color. I had a similar color in my box, so I tied it on. We moved directly on the point after they left and the color started working better than what we had been trying. The fish are biting very light and very, very short. We went through 2 dozen worms and left shortly after running out. I ended up with 5 and B. ended up with 4. He caught the biggest of the day with about a 14", 1lb. eye. It's always fun to see someone catch a "new" fish.

Prepared the fish last night starting with Fish Crisp original coating and adding a fair amount of Italian seasoning and Sechwan pepper blend to the mix. Moistened fillets with water and rolled them in the mix. Fried in about 1/4 inch of veggie oil (normally use peanut, but B. is allergic). Served myself, my girlfriend, B., and his girlfriend along side a simple pasta alfredo with a glass of white wine.

Afterwards B. agreed that they may not be the best fighting fish, but that they are still fun to catch, and that the meal is well worth the trip. He can't wait to go agin.

No pics, sorry. I can't find my camera. I'll buy a new one soon anyway. It's about time this computer geek went digital.

I have heard alot of people saying that 20 + inch walleye in Starvation are few and far between??? I am interested in going up there to do some walleye fishing, but still pretty new at the walleye.

Thanks Kayote. Fish Crisp is the best pre-packaged coating mix that I have ever tried. Heard about on some canadian fishing show and then found it at Wal-Mart. They only had the original and the cajun. The company has four or five flavors. I haven't seen it over there in a while, and I'm out after last night. The web site still lists Wal-Mart as a carrier, but the one out here doesn't have any. If you are interested....

I hear tales of big fish here and there, but personally, I've only caught 2 over 20" out of that lake. I've seen a 6.5, and 8, and one 9lb eye come out. None on my line of course. The 9lb was netted, the 6.5 was the big fish of the fall classic a couple of years ago and caught about 50yds away from me, The 8lb was a pre-spawn April catch by a guy out here that I see over there often. All I know is his name is Bill and I'd sure like a chance to learn what he knows about that lake. I showed him the biggest one I've ever caught over there, and he says, "Yeah, that's about the average for this time of year." This is what he called average.

Well I am going to still have to come out and do some fishing!!! I talked to the owner of food town in Duchesne about his big walleye on mounted in the store, I think he said it was caught by the dam. But thanks for the answer for the question on starvation!!!

What irony...I was just going to get on and post up to ask if anyone does any fishing at Starvation because I never see any posts on it....then you post up your report.

Sounds like a fun trip. I've been wanting to make it out there for some time now. With such an abundance of walleye, does Starvation provide action all summer? When have you found is the best time of year to fish it?

The summer is the only time of year I can catch Walleye. I keep trying spring and fall, with little or no luck. Until about September, starvation produces fairly fast action for eyes, and if you are targeting them, Smallmouth until you're sick of them. I am starting (trying) to learn the Browns in the spring. they ran an average around 18-19" this spring. Last spring the only one I caught was 22". The biggest was 25".

If you are out during Aug. 11-16 you can catch the county fair in Duchesne.

The Walleye Classic tourney is Sept 6-7. Unless you are fishing in it, I can't recommend being on the water. There are at least 75 boats that pound on those fish for a week. I've caught a few during the tournament, but they get a good case of lock-jaw for the most part.
