Decided to spend the morning at Deer Creek hoping to beat the storm they keep saying is on it's way. On the walk in we saw two open spots. They seemed to be due to warm springs, we didn't know where there. The bite was a little slow but still enough to keep us interested. About noon A bald eagle came in a grabbed a large fish that was sitting on the ice by three fellows that were fishing a little ways from us. I grabbed the camera and sprinted over: ok I shuffled, being clothed in all my warm clothing. The eagle seemed reluctent to fly and just hopped a little as I tried to get closed. It eventually left the fish and flew away. I got within about 10 feet of it. Wish I would have had a good camera with a zoom, I could have got some great close ups. We ended keep three rainbows, about 17 inches. Put several small ones back.. Weather was great. The ice is plenty thick but the edges are a little soft. We didn't have any trouble but we were careful. Thanks to the three fellows that let me barge into their space and take pictures. They didn"t have a camera only a cell phone

You are right FOD. George was sure that the eagle would leave before he could get over there so he didn't even move from the chair. As a result he did catch the most fish for the day, but who's counting.

I'm wondering where you were at on the lake, those warm springs could have been a disaster for someone just before the ice melted off them.

we were fishing the wallsberg arm. the edges were a little bit soft, ice was plenty thick. there were several groups fishing that part of the res.

I really loved that post! My youngest brother was paraplegic and his favorite thing to do was photograph wildlife. He had some fantastic pictures of eagles that he took from his car up at Farmington Bay. One winter things froze up pretty solid up there & he got to worrying about the eagles survival so he started going to the butcher shop & getting the cheapest chickens he could buy & taking them up there to give to them. It wasn't long until a lot of the eagles learned to recognize the little white Isuzu Amigo he drove. When they would see him coming, they would head clear out to the end of the dike as far as you can drive & they'd circle until he pitched out the chickens and here they came. He had to back away just a little for them to come in at first but then they got like it appears that eagle at DC is now and they would just come in & feed. He & I often wondered what might have happened to him if he'd ever been caught.
Anyway, thanks for posting. It kindled some mighty fond memories.
