I am having a heck of a time getting out and going fishing. I really enjoy fishing, and have a pretty good amount of time to get out, I am just not going. And when I do go I always seem to go back to the same places. I know of a few places relatively close to me that I can consistently catch fish and that is where I always end up.

My main question is how do you guys/gals decide on new water to fish? I am not big into ice fishing, so I end up on the South Fork above heise 90% of the time. I am pretty sure I could drive to my holes with a blindfold on, I have been there so many times.

I guess I just need to step up and go somewhere else. I am just looking for some insight on choosing new water. Not looking for specifics necessarily, just how you get motivated to try some new areas.

Why don't you give the North Fork a try . Up around St Anthony . The Rainbows up there fight like crazy , Jump Jump Jump . Curt G.

I get motivated by the adventure of finding fish in new places. I like the idea that I can catch fish anywhere fish are to be found. That isn't necessarily the case but it is the goal.

I love reading water whether it is on a lake or a river and deciding where the fish might be and how I am going to get to them.

One of my favorite summer activities is "blue lining" that is when I get out my map and find a creek in the mountains that I have never fished before. Then I try to get to that spot. Sometimes I find that it isn't possible to fish that area for one reason or another but I usually find a fish or two on the way.

I do about the same as Windriver. I would get a map, decide on how far I want to drive and then draw a circle of that distance. I then start looking so see what is inside that circle. I use to do it for camping also, except we used a Twister spinner from the game and wrote N,S,W,E on it. We would give it a spin and which ever way it pointed, we would pack up and just drive in that direction until we either found something that looked good or got tired of driving. We also used a dart board and a map a few times. I found areas to camp and fish that I have never heard of before. Some places were great fishing, others were not so good, but that is what it is all about. For me, getting out and seeing new places is great and the fishing is a great bonus.

I will head up around St. Anthony and give it a shot. I am also going to try the map idea a couple guys have. This will work good for this spring and summer when I want to go camping/fishing. I am heading out tomorrow, hopefully I will find some new holes, and who knows maybe the big fish of the year!

I have noticed that I get sort of discouraged when I decide to go out because I always end up in the same old places. I just need to get over it and accept that I need to venture out and try new things.

On a side note I do have a few big trips planned this year, one in March, two in May, and one in July. Hopefully these will quench my thirst for new water and fish.

Thanks for the advice, and keep the new lacations and motivational ideas coming.

i think most of us probly have out spots that we feel confident about. but half the fun in fishing to me is trying out new places and new tacticts. i see what you are saying that when you know you can catch fish at "your favorite hole". but like you have said at some point it looses its sense of adventure. just remember ever stream has its holes. it just takes some searching to find the next favorite.

Well, I stepped it up the last three days. Went to some old standby places, and some new places. I didn't catch anything impressive, but did catch a few fish in some new places.

I will be heading to Colorado in March and will be trying for a couple greenback cutthroat. Hopefully I can find a couple.

Thanks to all for the good words, and ideas from everyone, keep it coming. Hopefully this will also motivate some other people to find new holes and water.
