I'm headed to salmon in the morning for my first steelhead fishing trip and was wondering if anyone recommended any locations and what they are hitting right now. And just any help would be awsome. I will post how I do when I get back

Welcome to the forum. I am not a steelhead fisherman yet, but you can check back in the archives and learn quite a bit about locations. Some of the recent reports also have some good information.
Hope to hear from you soon.

I'd drift fish a small corkie (size of your pinkie nail or smaller) a bit of yarn and a small gob of eggs. Concentrate on the tailout of pools early and late in the day and the slots where water drops in to pools when the sun is overhead. Think overhead cover (riffles). I don't really have a specific hole, but know that since the ice blew out at deadwater, the fish are moving.

Thank you I will try that. Do they like dead water or swift what is a good hole to look for

Look for a ton of people, that is where the fishing is good.

If you go into the canyon. You will find fish almost anywhere. They are starting to move. Be patient. I always have an assortment of corkies, grubs, and helgies. And I definitely tie up a bunch of spawn sacs. The rule I have always been told is the clearer the water the smaller the gear. So have some differnet sizes as the water's calrity can change quickly. If the water is real murky you will want some larger corkies and grubs or Helgies. Make sure you use some scent and you'll start nailing some steelies in no time. I try to spend 30 mins per hole and keep moving until I start catching fish. I would recommend starting around the Owl creek area in the canyon. This area has really been producing some nice fish. Good Luck and be prepared to spend thousands of dollars after your first trip. It gets very expensive if you catch the "fever"

Not dead. There needs to be some current. look where a riffle/rapid drops in to a pool, or the bottom 1/4 of the pool where it tails out. Fish the tail outs early and late (low light) and fish the top of the pool when it is brighter out.

Dead water is just down stream of the northfork. If their is a section that is iced over that is dead water. If you are staying around salmon try going to the fourth of july camp ground it down stream of salmon. Their is a big hole their, two weeks ago we landed 4 their.
