Went up to Kamas Lake (uintas) this morning. Got to the lake at 6:30 am. Lots and lots of risers, mainly around the edges. Pretty finicky eaters though. Took a while to find what they wanted. Caught enough to make the rest of my day (work) enjoyable. One was about 15 inches and none were under 11". And a bleeder is gonna make me a fine dinner tonight.

Just a quick morning trip today. Tomorrow I will head up somewhere else. Maybe Cuberant, maybe Fire, or Murdock Basin area. I was impressed with the size and fight in those Kamas Cutts though.

During the elk hunt last year, i fished some of the creeks in the murdock area. Didnt get into anything but brookies!!! [
] most between 6-12 inches. I did alot more fishing than hunting, when you get your elk before everyone else in your group, you have to do something to keep yourself occupied!!!

Gotta love fishin' on an elk hunt. Did the same thing a couple years ago in the spirit lake area. Lot's of brookies in those murdock basin streams. Lot's of brookies almost everywhere really. I like to go after the cutties, they can be a real challenge and they get a little more size to them usually. BTW, echo lake in the murdock basin can sometimes give ya a golden trout or two.

Junksiege, do you live up in the Kamas Valley ???? I would love to fish the Uintas alot more. I have never caught a golden trout, what do they look like? I have caught albinos, are they similar?

Polokid, I live in South Salt Lake. Golden trout are a golden yellow color. They are, I believe only stocked in a few waters. The only one I know of is echo. I have fished echo many times and have seen only a handful in/out of the water. I don't think they get very large...just shy of a pound would be a monster. They are really slender and basically just look like a golden trout!

Unless you fish for them in Montana. state record came out two years ago at just over five lbs. Do they still stock in echo? i heard the golden program was cut off along time ago. just curious.

Wow xman, a five pound golden? That would be something to see! I'm not an expert on golden trout as I've only seen them in Echo and they were really little, six or seven inchers. I'm not sure if they still stock them. I do remember see them in the kamas hatchery probably five years ago if my memory serves me.
Oh yeah, do you know if that montana golden was the same species as the ones here in utah? I wonder if there are slightly different species. I doubt it, but it may be, i dunno. They are/were so rare around here that probably not too many people got into catching them or studying them. Kind of like a novelty trout.

They are all the same species if i am correct on this. California goldens were planted along time ago in the western states. I do not believe there are any substrains or species of goldens persay. I looked this up awhile ago and remember one species of goldens. I know that was what is stocked or was stocked in this state. as well as montana and wyoming.

polokid, are you saying that you got your elk in the Murdock Basin area and that you got it early in the hunt? And was it a bull or a cow elk? Just curious.
