Going to head for Salmon Sat morning. Anyone know the river report? I heard the canyon is getting muddy. If it is I think I'll head for Challis

I am heading for Challis in the morning. Figured I would start there and see what happens. If nothing is happening I am going to head down river. It all depends on the fish, the river, and the weather. I have not heard anything on the water conditions. Last thing I heard was there was still ice coming down and with the temps this weekend, I would expect a lot of ice coming down.

If I were you I would take the time and hit down below the narrows. The fishing has been amazing lately. I was there yesterday and today. Game on.

whatdo ppl mean when they say ''fish the tail out?'' what is that exactly?

right before the slow part of the pool starts to get fast again. after steelhead pass through rapids and they hit that slower water they stop there to take breaks.

I am headed down tomorrow with my old man. I was woundering what section of the river you are calling the narrows. I am new to fish the salmon area. Any help would be apreciated.

Downstream from owl creek just about anywhere you'll get into fish.

Now after I am back I see your post. We did make it a few miles past Owl Creek, but had no luck. Only seen 2 fish caught the last 2 days. Only bites I had were just below Challis. The river is clear and no ice floating anywhere. Only place I seen backed up was before Challis. It was still froze and just waiting to break free. After 2 days fishing I caught one 15" Pike Minnow and one sucker. Guess I will wait a few weeks and then try again.

I'm guessing its the full moon.....I've had two slow days recently too...only one bite, I hooked, none landed...
i'm on stillwater though...

Got back last night from the owl creek area. We managed to bring home 28 fish between the six of us. It was a good weekend. The fish fought hard and were all non native fish.

How do you guys like to cook you steelheads? Im looking for something new to try.

I like to can them. They make excellent fish patties. If i catch some that are firm i take a fillet and lay it on a plate and place in the freezer to make it really cold (but don't freeze). Then i take a 1/4 cup olive oil and heat in a pan bring oil to a frying heat. Them cover the cold fillet with a combination of crushed cracked and your favorent spices ( i like alpine touch and garlic with a pinch of white pepper and celery powder finely chopped onion and bell pepper) If you have a hard time getting the cover to stick use a little bit of whiped egg. Then fry. Make sure to dry your veggies after chopping this will help them stick. This workes best with fresh fish.
Enjoy.

Well we started fishing below owl creek about 30 mins before sunrise and I hooked one and lost it within the first 10 minutes. Then it took another 2-2 1/2 hrs to get another bite. This time I landed it and it was a nice lil 24" native. Had to release it. It took another 3 hrs to get another one and finally it was a keeper. A really nice male about 28" and still had quite a lot of chrome to it. Should be tasty. We then hit the road and stopped and fished a few pockets between Salmon and Challis and didn't get a bite. It's still a little early for them to be moving, but soon enough they will be. With the warm weather this week the water should warm enough to get them steelies high tailing it for the spawn beds. I can't wait for the next adventure...

I was up there wed threw sunday and the water was great. I fished down past the middle fork most of the time to get away from the crowd. It was great, caught at least 7 fish a day. Sunday fished half a day and caught 8 around the middle fork. I think there plenty of fish all threw the river. Had some buddies go down past corn creek and between three of them landed 17 so they say and that was sat. I caught a lot of wild ones like 70 % of them were wild.

i love catching the wild ones to me they seem to fight alot harder.

I used to think that as well but after personally witnessing over 1000 steelhead get put in the boat this fall and winter I noticed that at times a wild steelhead would not fight well at all and a hatchery fish would be all over the place. I think in the end it really just depends on the individual fish........

On cooking steelhead- if you get a good fresh fish, take your fillets and brine them for a few hours in 2 tablespoons of salt in 4 cups water (and dried garlic or whatever herbs you like). Then dry them off and throw them on the grill with some soaked alder wood chips... this is how I like them. If they're close to spawning and kind of soft, smoke the heck out of them and freeze or can them.
