My son and I are chomping at the bit to chase these prize fish. However, I am still driving a 2-wheel drive pickup and am very concerned about road conditions. If you are talking about Salmon and Challis, the highway runs along the river and hasn't been bad to drive all winter.

You can literally drive a compact car all the way from the Middle fork of the Salmon up to the head waters. 80 percent of it is paved. That covers about 100 miles of steelhead fishing water.

Won't be a problem. Just before Shoup on downstream it turns to dirt road and gets some bad washboard sometimes, but otherwise it won't be a bit of a problem. I take my Subaru Outback in there every year. On the other hand I also take it elk hunting on roads that say high clearance, 4 wheel drive vehicles only beyond this point.... But this road is much nicer[

i wouldnt go below colston creek without 4wheel and a spare or two... they dont maintain the road below there until spring. but from conston creek all the way to stanley you would have no problem.
