My neighbor and I fished below Shoup Friday evening and Saturday morning and we managed to land 5 steelhead between us.
Saturday we got a fishing lesson from 2 guys that caught at least 10 each before we left around noon.
There were around 12 people lined up along the stretch of river we were fishing and these 2 guys were whacking the fish while guys close to them only caught a few or some were skunked. We only got 1 on Saturday and it was frustrating to see these guys hook one after another while everyone else struggled. They were not right next to each other and they had other guys near them so it wasn't like they had the prime spot to themselves. When I talked to them they told me that they had never fished this run before. Either they were lucky or good and my guess is they were good.
Maybe someday if we keep at it we will be able to get the steelhead mojo like those guys. I am thinking about changing my forum name to "Rookie SteelFisher" since that is what I am.
Attached are a couple of pictures.

Great job. Looks like you did pretty well to me. Maybe some day my life will slow down at this time of year so I can go.

its all about the feel bud they were simply feeling bites that you were not! it happens to me every once in awhile but other days i cant miss a single bite! i love those days.

Chrome J is right on about having the read or feel! The right rod and reel makes a big difference but the biggest thing is spending the time. A lot of guys start on the rivers around their homes a month or two before they hit the MetalHead water and are back to fishing Bows and Browns using similar techniques after Steelie season. How do you get to Carnegie Hall? Practice, practice, practice.

Can't wait to get up there. We are planning a trip in two weeks to try out that rod you sold me. Put some fresh line on it and I've been getting the tackle ready to go.

Guess I need more practice. By the way, when do the B-Runs start coming up? I do a little better on bigger fish.

The B runs are in by Thanksgiving.

go down to the middlefork. the wild b runs stack inthere before they head up the middlefork. from what i hear they have been doing well down there this spring

a week or two they will move up to bellow shoup first and second weeks of march i tend to catch more b runs in that area. but dont be suprised if a few start getting picked up this weekend.........BY ME!!!!!!! lol i wish.

Thanks for the info and suggestions. for someone who is new to the whole thing how is a steelhead bite different? or how is the equipment different? Thanks again.
90 % of the time most anglers think its just dragging across rocks it almost feels like it is dragging across a gravel bed but there is a suttle little difference that you have to learn to pick out.

Hey Guys,
I'm new to Steelhead, and have never been. I have geared up for floating jigs, as well as roe. I'm going the first time Monday the 8th. I will be heading for Nampa area ultimately from Coeur D' Alene area. So I would just like any pointers to where I might find the run on that date? I would also like to know some of the etiquette so that I don't piss anybody off. I will be fishing alone. I plan on just watching for a bit before casting away. Any info would be of great help.
Thank You Very Much,
Z, aka Pike_Bait

along your route I would recommend trying around Riggins. Try not to get your lines crossed w/ other peoples, apologize if you do. wait for the guy downstream of you to cast before you do so you don't end up cast over eachother.

I was also wondering if below the dam at Orofino might be a good spot to try. I will watch that I'm not casting out of rotation. Thanks for the heads up.

thanks for the info. i guess it just boils down to getting more time on the water than I typically get.
I have fished below dworshak dam late in the season and it was good. 7 landed in 2 hrs. This early on though I haven't a clue.
