I am looking into building/buying a creel for the upcomming season, my question is about how to use it.

I have read some confusing information about how they work. I understand that the point is to keep the creel wet to keep fish moist and cool so it stays fresh while you are on the water but what I am Confused on is the state of the fish inside.

Do I "quick kill" the trout, to be more humane and put it in the creel out of water, do i put the fish in the creel alive out of water or am I susposted to put it in the creel alive and keep the creel in the water?

Sorry if this seems like a rudimentary question. I had done most of my fishing after work and if I was keeping I would just dispatch the fish quickly and keep it in a bag in the cool evening air untill I got home ( about an hour tops). This year I would like to try and do more "fishing trips" and will need to keep fish fresh for longer periods but I will be on foot and not in a boat w/ a cooler or live well

thanks
peace

I have a creel that I have never used, but my grandpa had one and used it all the time and as lurtch said just put some wet grass in it to keep it nice and cool for the fish.
