Went to CJ last weekend and stopped by the dam right before I left. There was a guy there who had about a dozen nice perch from 8-12" so I figured I'd try for some today.
Last weekend it was so calm the water was like glass. Today, well... When I was driving down Simco Road, it looked like there was some kind of tumbleweed mass migration going on, and there was huge dust cloud near Grandview that was dark enough so you had to turn your lights on. When I got there and stood on the embankment by the dam, the wind was blowing so hard you had to brace yourself against it or end up in the water. I didn't see a single boat out, because there were whitecaps everywhere.
I headed over to the Narrows access area to fish for trout and see if the water was any calmer behind the ridge, since the wind was coming from the northwest. It was out of the worst of the wind, but you could still see sheets on top of the water from the gusts. I parked close so I could use my car as a windbreak, and fished for about 4 hours. I was getting bites within a few minutes of casting out, but the only problem was I could hardly tell because the wind was blowing so hard. They must have just stocked rainbows, since I caught a bunch and none were longer than 10 inches. Released all but two that were bleeders.
I'll put up with a lot if the fish are biting, but that wind was just too much. I had plans to stay until after dark, but packed up and left at dusk. At least I didn't get skunked, but if I wanted to catch 10" planters, I could have saved myself the 100 mile round trip. [:/]
