[cool]I fished I finally found some feeding permit Monday. I fished with Dan Weinrich, about 28 miles southwest of New Pass. I dipped some live crabs that were on a floating dredge pipe, and using these as bait, we caught a 20 pound permit and a 16 pound permit. We also caught keeper mangrove snapper and grunts on live shrimp, and released grouper shorts, caught on live pinfish.
Tuesday, Jeff Disenzo and friend, Paul, didn’t mind the rain too much because the fish were biting—We fished with shrimp, 12 miles southwest of New Pass, and caught small hogfish, Spanish mackerel to 22 inches, keeper mangrove snapper, porkfish, and assorted reef fish. Fishing in that same area Wednesday with Tom Von Selve, daughter Emily, and friend Dan, we caught keeper Spanish mackerel and triggerfish, and released red grouper shorts and assorted bottomfish.
Peter Haluenen and friends, Jack, Larry and Noel, fished with me Thursday at the Bonita reefs, using live shrimp and grunts. We caught Spanish mackerel to 24 inches, lots of keeper triggerfish, keeper mangrove snapper, and had our lines broken by a couple of big goliath grouper.
Dan Weinrich fished with me again on Friday, this time accompanied by his 10 year old son, Brody. We fished the artificial reefs, and caught a 22 inch permit—There was a school of them there until a boat disrupted them—We also caught keeper mangrove snapper, and Spanish mackerel to 23 inches. We also got to release a 5 foot nurse shark, and watch a barracuda grab one of our incoming snapper.
Saturday, I fished with the Steward family--Dick, Melinda, Eric, and Rusty—28 miles southwest of New Pass. We used live shrimp, Spanish sardines, and cut bait, and caught a keeper red grouper, four keeper yellowtail snapper, keeper lane snapper & mangrove snapper, and grunts. We released about 50 red grouper shorts. We managed to skirt the nasty storms that rolled through Saturday afternoon.
