Three of us went to Mill Meadow on Tuesday for what looks to be the last trip of this ice fishing season. The ice conditions were OK in the morning, but as the day progressed the ice got soft and the edges were mostly water. The flow coming in from the creeks picked up and the lake level rose thus creating the water pockets on the edges. The fishing was still very good and we had our best perch fishing success of the season. The three of us caught an incredible number of perch and six brown trout. We took 70 perch home and the trout to a woman who actually likes to eat trout.
I would strongly urge caution to any of you who decide to stretch the season. It would be prudent to take along a ladder or board to bridge the soft edges safely. I would also suggest that you use the same safety practices as early season ice fishing. Always fish with a partner and take along a rope with a method of throwing it to someone in need. It's been a great season at Mill Meadow and I hope the increased harvest of perch this winter will yield some results in the form of larger perch when we get over there next December.
Be careful out there!
