I am from Las Vegas and am planning a fishing trip at redfish lake in central Idaho. I have never been there before and was wondering if anyone had some tips for me. I am bringing my boat so I will have access to the entire lake. I was wondering if the preferred method for catching trout was with powerbait or worms or is trolling with lures more effective. How about those landlocked salmon? Also I read there were stripers in this lake. I an familiar with them as we have stripers in Lake Mead. We usually catch them with anchovies or trolling with lures. Any help would be greatly appreciated. My reservations for this trip is the last week of June 2010.

THere are stripers in there? First I've heard of that. The salmon are supposed to be there, but have been ocean run salmon (sockeye specicifically) but they are endangered and don't get much of a return, and absolutely none that you can target. I guess they may have planted kokanee in there though which trolling w/ a downrigger or lead line should work. I know last year they posted a thread on this lake so maybe check out the older posts to find that would help. Either way, the scenery is so great up there who cares about the great trout fishing in the streams (yeah right). Really the scenery is great, the rivers and creeks often have great trout fishing, but be aware of regs for the protected species including salmon and bull trout in that area. Should be a great trip!

Go back in the history of this site, because earlier this winter a fellow--from Colorado I believe--asked tons of questions about the area, and got terrific advice from many contributors. The boat is a great idea to access the far side of the lake, and to get a view of the lake you will never forget. But there are better lakes to troll, such as Stanley L. Your best fishing will probably be the river. The Salmon goes right through town, and usually produces limits that time of year. Mike
P.S.: Stripers?! No way!

lol... no stripers. the kokanee are the (landlocked salmon) your refering to i am guessing. and there are plenty of them. they spawn naturaly in the there not planted. i dont know anyone who has actualy trolled for them in there. they are very, very small and in my mind not worth targeting. there are bulltrout, cutthroat, and rainbow in there. but besure to know your regulations. you cant keep any bulltrout, the cutts have to be over 16 or 20 inches i cant remember which. and the rainbows are far and few. if you go up that way and plan on trolling i would suggest stanley lake or alturis lake which are both within 30 minutes. if you have never been to this are you will love it. bring warm closes no matter what time of year. i have seen it snow up there every month out of the year and freezes reguarly

Thanks for the info. The reason I thought there were stripers in this lake is because I went to the redfish lodge webpage and it listed all the fish that are supposedly in this lake and stripers and LM bass were on that list. So I obviously need to look into the fishing regulations for Idaho. I get the feeling that maybe this lake is not a real good fishing lake. A friend of mine was at this lake a couple of years ago and said it was beautiful. He agreed to pay for my lodging if I agreed to bring my boat...so I said sure. We are going to be there for a week so we can check out other lakes and rivers. Thanks again for the info.

Ranger,
Just got to thinking, re your boat. You will be passing a couple of great fishing spots on the way up. You will be passing Magic Reservoir and it should be great fishing for larger rainbows, browns, and perch. We usually hammer them when during the time of year when you will be there. If interested, PM me for specifics. It sure isn't as pretty as Redfish, but the trout can be very cooperative. Mike

I live in Boise and may end up moving to Vegas later this summer. I am real excited to hear about your trolling at Lake Mead. When I saw Lake Mead from a commercial jet for the first time, the gentleman sitting next to me said the lake was empty of fish so he burst my bubble. Can you tell me any more about it?
Thanks.
