I decided to get serious on the steelhead and try Chromejunkies route. Bought a New GL3 Medium Fast 8'6" rod and a Curado 201E7 to put on it tonight. I should be heading out Saturday morning to hopefully get the skunk off this new setup. Hope everything goes well.

Chromejunkies set up worked pretty good for him. We went out last Sunday and he caught 3 on it. Where are you gonna be heading on Saturday? I will be driving down as well...staying Saturday and Sunday...

I will be tenting it again when I go up. I went with the GL3 for 2 reasons. One is after holding both and playing with them for about an hour, the GL2 seemed more like a wet noodle compared to the GL3. The GL2 would flex quite a bit from the tip down about 3'-4'. The GL3 only flexed about the top 18" and felt like it had a little more backbone and would be a little easier to cast and control. The second reason is the GF bought me the reel so I had enough to buy the rod that I felt would work the best and felt the best in my hands. I really was only after a Fenwick, but Sportman's was out of them, so I figured no sense in putting a nice reel on a cheap pole.

I will be fishing the same place again. Look for a Pewter 96' MAV. No sticker on it as it is the GF's.

the difference between the gl2 and gl3 is the amount of graphite. so yeah its going to have a little more spine than the gl2

The GL2 is a hunk of junk, for the price of a gl2 you can get a far better rod for the money. However the gl3 and IMX are where its at. I've owned and still do own all of the above and would never waste my money on a new gl2, I'd have a custom rainshadow built for the same price.

I have the GL3 with the 301e7 curado reel and absolutely love it. Best investment I have ever made in fishing gear. Worth every penny

your entitled to your opinion about the gl2 but i happen to like it it suites me very well.

Sure they work and there are far worse rods out there. For your average fisherman a gl2 isnt a bad choice and I'm sure it works for you just fine.

wow nothin like raining on a guys parade!!!

pvrt let me know how it works. would love to hear.

cause im an average angler and im new to fishing.

I have a gl2 and gl3 and i think they both are great rods. I guess we all cant be a great fisherman like you. I don't think of my self as a average fisherman.

Seems to be a common theme with someone raining on other peoples parades.

Jigs, I will post how things go when I get back. I am hoping it does not end as the last three trips have ended. If it was not for the weather outside right now, I would have been down on the river practicing. Besides, Chrome will be there Sunday, so maybe his luck will rub off a bit.

i guesse the bickering will only grow as the site gains popularity. could be worse it could be like the utah site [:/].

good luck. im sure it will pay off sounds like you have paid your dues. what stretch of the river are you guys planning on hitting? i might be heading up sunday for a couple days. its still up in the air though.

I will be at Deer Gulch Sat and Sun. It is not as far for me to drive as Salmon or Shoup, and I have usually done ok there.

Really? Wouldn't have guessed that by any means. If so then a gl2 is a perfect entry level rod for someone thats new to fishing and has the means to buy a quality name rod like a loomis.

Besides flaming people and their equipment, I don't think you would know the difference between a good rod and a bad one. If you think the GL2 is a hunk of junk, and I own over 40 Loomis rods you probably don't understand that each rod has its strength and reason for use. Knowing which rod to pull and when might be a thing. [Image: bobwink.gif]

Wow thats rich right there...........Ask any rod builder about the quality of a gl2 vs the price tag and they will set you up with a far better blank for the money. Sure each loomis rod serves a different purpose that is why they have a line of steelhead series rods as well as a crankbait series as well as everything inbetween. All my gl2 rods are pretty much reserved for pulling plugs or used for divers and bait because they are just not sensitive enough for drift fishing or sidedrifting plus they are heavy compared to the top of the line blanks........

Nice choice on the 301. I fish a 301 DSV on a 8'6" Cabela's Fish Eagle II rod. It's not a GL2 or a GL3 but I have landed ###'s of fish with it. The good thing about the 301 is that you can load it up with some 20#-30# test if we are lucky enough to have a Salmon season in our neck of the woods.

Have a good one!!

Shouldn't the bickering over whether a GL2 is a good rod or not deserve it's own thread rather than hijacking this one? Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but this thread was meant for someone mentioning they are testing their new rod which is a GL3, not even the apparently argumentative GL2. Let's move on.[crazy]
