So for giving 15 years at my work, I get a choose a gift like luggage, watch, etc. Pretty cheap gifts but better than a kick in the butt. Anway, one of the choices is a Daiwa pole that can be used for spin or fly fishing. Has anyone ever used something like this for fly fishing? I know it would be a decent spin rod but wondering if using it as a fly rod would be worth it or not. Anyone ever try one of these combos?

Yes I have and the fact that a spinning and a fly rod have totally different guides for different reasons, one sacrifices and it is the Fly end.
They are good spinning but not so good fly. Tuff to cast.
I guess it would be okay as a beater and the price is perfect[laugh]

I'd stay away from the combo rods from a performance standard. But if it's free, you aren't out anything if you don't like it. If there was other stuff in the list that you think you'd use, I'd go with that over a combo spin/fly rod if it were me.

I have one and it is a very good rod. I use it to travel with. I have used the fly reel on it and yes it is shorter than a regular fly rod you can still have fun with it. I enjoy using the rod and will continue to use it. [cool] Again very good rod.

It is not the length, I have a 5'3" fly rod. It's that the guides are not the right guides. They will be over sized and not in the right place.
It will cast, and it will catch fish, but it is not a very good fly rod. I agree with the if there were something else on the list.
Again, I have had one of these. My nephew LOVES the spinning side.

Thanks everyone for the info. The bad part is there is nothing else on the list that I would really use. I spin fish also, so I guess at least I could use it fo that. And like flygoddess said, it is the right price.

I usually use it for spin fishing, I have only used it for fly once and that was because I was out of state and wanted to see what it would do. It worked ok as FG says. Since I was on business travel I really didn't need a nice fly rod. I still take the rod on business trips with me and usually only use the spinning side, but I do take my fly reel along just for incase.
