Speaking about fish hooks, with my old age creeping in on me (my finger do not work like they used to) and my eye site (needing reading glasses,Yuk) does any one have a great idea on how to release the bad hook from the very small eyelet.

Does taking the barb off the hook help in the release of a fish, (that is how I lost the hook)
Does the barb help keep the fish on while bringing it in to be netted.

As seen above (brook hook) what are some good hooks to use other than factory or the hooks that come on the lures.

Your hooks should be attached with split rings. If not then add split rings when you replace the hooks. Split ring pliers help a lot to hold the split ring open. Mustad makes good replacement hooks as well as several other companies. Should be able to get all this at Cabela's, Bass Pro Shops, or Sportsmans.

Removing the barbs will help you in releasing fish easily, however you must keep the line tight during your battle because the hooks can back out on their own easier too. If you fight fish well, you won't loose too many. You don't get to make as many mistakes. With barbless hooks you can gently shake the fish free without even touching it.

Thanks for the help, sorry I did not respond sooner I was away for a few days, [angelic] The split rings are also very hard to remove or open, I did not know they made a tool for them, I will check it out THANKS again..

They can be tough, I have recently replaced quite a few of mine, and they require a lot of pressure and exactness for the little ones. Another option is to get the stuff and come to something like tubedudes fishing 101 class (PM tubedude for time and date) and I would be happy to try to help out and put some on for ya.

[cool][#0000ff]Hey Bro, since I make and repair a lot of spoons and hardbaits I keep a large supply of split rings on hand...and have several different split ring tools. You need special small ones for the smaller split rings. I also have a special hook cutting tool for clipping off the rings on hooks that have been made right onto the lure, without a split ring. [#0000ff]Let me know if you would like to bring some lures to my place for "tune-ups". I also have a pretty complete selection of treble hooks from standard to 4X strong...depending upon the kind of fishing you do with them. I will only charge for the materials you use...probably not more than ten times my cost. LOL. Actually, as most will tell ya, I work cheap...and worth every penny.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]I have always found it Sad that lure manufacturers come up with such great designs and colors...and then skimp on the quality of the split rings and hooks. If you don't replace the hardware on some lures you are inviting disaster the first time you hook a decent sized fish. Wipers especially are known for bending hooks and tearing up split rings. And, if you get into some large stripers at Powell you can count on losing both fish and lures to wimpy hardware.[/#0000ff]
