[cool][#0000ff]Newbie BFT tubers Wagdog and Dr. Veha just got new Fat Cats and brought them to the tubeatorium for some pimpin'. They had looked through some past picture posts and decided they wanted a modular setup that had a base attached more or less permanently to the tube and could then snap on (or off) the rod tubes and utility pieces. [/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]I got busy and put together a new version of my older model that incorporates all of the latest and greatest of my most recent innovations. I am really happy with the design and the function of these new rod racks and utility racks. The main challenge was that Dr. Veha is left handed so we had to make his setup a mirror image (reversed) from Wagdog's.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]The end result is a base assembly that can work with virtually any tube or toon. On a tube you need to build a wood frame inside the pocket to which you screw down the base assembly. On a pontoon you could attach it to a frame with screws, bolts, hose clamps, zip ties or whatever. [/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Once the base assembly is in place you just add the free-swiveling rod tubes or tool holders. They are all interchangeable. And, since both of these guys like to carry a fly rod on most trips, we made one of the rod tubes with the deep slot to accomodate a fly rod and reel setup safely on the water.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]The free swiveling holder setup allows for flexibility in spacing. Spread them wider for bigger reels, etc. Fold them flat against the tube when putting them in your vehicle to transport them...or just pop them off and carry them inside a pocket until you are ready for them again.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]It took a while to finalize the design concept, and it takes some time to measure, cut and assemble the component parts. But, the costs are not too bad. With all of the PVC pipe, fittings and screws it still cost only about $10 per side...rod rack or utility rack...including the bait rigger setups and the sonar rigging.[/#0000ff]

Very nice, clean looking and functional. Thank you

As always, awesome job. Looks like a killer set up.

Thanks for the post/pics thats very nicely done. Gives me some good ideas for how to approach things.

They are truly works of art!! You ARE the man...

[#0000ff]Some fools snort cocaine. I snort PVC dust.[/#0000ff]

Thanks again Pat! I am very impressed with the setup and can't wait to get it on the water.

And yes, you do seem to not mind the PVC dust at all. I took one whiff of that and I almost fainted. At least that is my excuse for not being more of a help on Saturday and just watching you do all of the work. [Smile]

Now I just need to get my sushi board, tube cart and another visit to your tackle room and I'll be ready for the whities.

My wife is under the impression that we just like the glue![cool]

[cool][#0000ff]Glad you like the setup. Now we have to get a "Gorilla Floatilla" going when the water warms and the kitties get active.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]I think you guys will really enjoy the convenience of having all your stuff within easy reach.[/#0000ff]

[cool][#0000ff]As you know I build rods, pour and paint (lead) jigs, make hardbaits and various other wierd fishing type activities. You have seen all of the bottles and cans of assorted adhesives, paints, dyes, glitters and coatings in my tackletorium. My wife thinks it's funny when I stagger out of that room and then start coughing when I get too much fresh air in my lungs. Not sure whether it is a dependency, addiction or just a super tolerance, but I need frequent "fixes".[/#0000ff]

I love you avatar pic.

Thanks! Yours is looking pretty good as well. Wink

Hopefully we'll break the new rigs in this week once this weather improves! I can't tell you how slick all of this stuff is Pat. Thanks so much for putting up with us. Not only did we snort pvc dust, there was a fair amount of bullsneeze in the air [laugh]. It made for a great Saturday morning. I'm going to try and rig up my fish basket tonight and I still need to rig up a sushi board.

[#0000ff][#000000]I resemble that remark! I think one of the reasons I like fishing from a float tube is that I don't have to wear those special gloves that keep my knuckles from draggin the ground...
I definitely want to swing by the Tackletorium for some white bass assassin jigs! Thanks again Pat!

[cool][#0000ff]It was much fun having you guys over for the pimpin' festivities. Glad I had everything precut and mostly assembled. Otherwise the "bullsneeze" factor would have probably delayed us for several more hours...or days. Get three wackos like us together in the same garage and the STUFF gets deep...and I ain't talkin' about PVC dust. Snort snort.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]I have a lot on my dance card until about the first of May. That is about when the whities should be gettin' frisky and we can hit the Knolls for some combo kitty/whitie tubin' trips. [/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]Yeeeee hawwwww. Bring it.[/#0000ff]

Hey TD, Sorry for dredging up a two month old post but I need a little clarification on the bracing that goes inside the pocket. Is there a 16" piece of wood on both ends of the 2" X 2"'s? Your picture shows a set of screws for each end of the 2X2 but I can't for the life of me figure out where they go unless there for the PVC base that's outside the pocket.

Thanks for the pictures and diagrams, I have all the supplies I need except for the schedule 20 PVC. Hopefully, Home Depot will have some.

[cool][#0000ff]Welcome aboard. No problem about dredging up an old post. That is a big part of the value of our threads...providing archive info for newbies. [/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]In the first pic I have shown the components. You attach the 16" piece of wood between the two end pieces of 2X2 to provide something to which to attach the exterior PVC base. You only need the piece on the outside wall of the pocket...and it is inside the cover so it does not show. [/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Home Depot has quit carrying the "type 200" PVC in my area, but Lowes usually has a good supply of all sizes. I use the 1" for rod holder tubes. You can also get the 1/2" in the lighter stuff but I recommend the heavier for tube construction projects. Stronger and they both take the same fittings.[/#0000ff]

You said something about snap on rod holders.....do they actually snap on? Or do they just slip on tightly?
[signature]
[cool][#0000ff]Depends on how "snappy" you feel on any given day. Actually they are just an unglued connection. They fit snugly enough that normal friction keeps them in place well...but they are simple to install and remove. [/#0000ff]
