Lake Powell has got to be one of the greatest lakes there is, lots of great fishing and endless scenery every place you look...

I left my home at 2:45 and made one stop at Provo to pick up a friend on the way down to Hite on the upper end of Powell...

After doing the paper work you need to launch we headed for the ramp or I guess you could call it that...

[inline DSC04881.JPG]

The ramp was dirt or mud and you had to back out till the boat could flot and hope the water didn't come in your doors...( this is not us but the people just in frount)

We was on the water and heading south air temp was a great 60 and still going up...

We would just pick a good looking spot and fish, the first stop and a nice 22" eye and two bass..

Then headed for other great spots and more fishing, we boat fish at about each stop with crappie, bass, and more walleyes the crappie we set a size at 15" to keep and walleye and striper to bring home the bass we'll let go they are just to much fun to catch...

By the end of the day we headed back to Hite to clean our catch of 6 crappie 3 eyes and only two stripers but we caught over 10 crappie from 11" to 15 3/4" and 3 eyes from 19" to 24" and 20 to 30 bass each....

Day two we had to head home by 2:00 so we hit the water as soon as it was light, Powell has just so much to see and do and all the fishing as well we got more crappie and only one eye but the bass fishing was on fire we had to be off the water by 2:00 to make it home, we did get off the water but that last cast and fish was at 3:30 (or so) it was a fast but great trip but Powell always is...

Bassrods, those are some nice looking fish, especially the healthy looking Largemouths. Great scenery all around you in the pictures.

I'm jealous, but luckily will be going down to Powell soon.

A question. Did you sell your boat and get a new one? If so, what did you buy?

Nice report.

Nice work, thanks for sharing and great pictures. Those bass are awesome. I particularly like the smallies.

I've never been to Powell but seeing pics like this and the story to go with them makes me sure I need to get down there sooner then later. Thanks for sharing!

I'm the good looking one in the pictures....

I have been to Powell a few times, however, only to Wahweap. How long of a drive is it from Provo to Hite Marina? Also what kind of accommodations do they have?

AWESOME. we were down there the week before Easter and couldn't find a smallie anywhere, or a striper. We managed a few LM and the crappie were phenomenal.

Those are awesome. Same baits for both? or did you have to target them specifically?

It would be a coin toss, but i think i would prefer to launch in the mud/dirt than make that mile and half walk up the ramp at Bullfrog... ha ha ha

PM sent on a couple specific questions....

[Smile]Nice pictures, Lake Powell especially north of Bullfrog is the best fishing around I think

Provo to Hite is about 4 hr with one stop for five min..

We used sleeping bags so not sure what they have, in the past they had trailers you could rent..

We tried to target them most of the time..

Bassrods,

Thanks for the report. I am headded down on April 22 and am most familiar with Hite, but was concerned about runoff and water clarity. Do you think Hite will still be OK or should I head down to Bullfrog (of which I know very little about)?

Looks like a great time. I would like to get down there. Haven't fished that lake for at least 10 years. Not sure how my 16ft aluminum Smoker Craft would handle those infamous Powell winds. Little scary.

It should still be good in Whites and down lake from there...
[signature]
If it gets windy don't go out, but I see that size of boat on the water and they seem to do alright...

I'd have kept and eaten every one of those delicious spring bass.

JK, I'm just jealous.

I've been hearing and reading a lot that this should be a banner year at Powell as far as size and quality of fish go. Did you find this to be true? Was there a noticeable difference in the overall size of fish over your trip last spring?

Yes bigger and fatter as well and more of them....
Its funny how more food in a lake makes all the other fish grow...But then the bucket will only hole so much...[sly][Wink]

Cliffy.. How long have you been fishing Lake Powell? Did you just start yesterday or what? Have you not noticed that Lake Powell goes through huge boom and bust cycles that are almost entirely dependent on the survival of shad/prey fishes? Did you not notice that the past few years the habitat at lake powell has improved because the lake level has risen and flooded brush providing prey species and young-of-the year fish more habitat?

Cliff, you complain when people come on here and make fun of the comments you make and then you come on here and post things like the above quote. Cliff, if you really understood the biology of fish and the limitations a habitat placed on fish, you would never make comments like the one above.

The bucket--lake powell-- can only hold so many pounds of fish biomass. That is why the stripers go on these huge cycles where their population booms and busts...once they eat themselves out of house and home, they stunt and die and their numbers drop until the prey fishes rebound...at which time the predator numbers increase and the prey decreases until we have another crash. It is amazing that for someone who fishes a lot, you don't understand this simple concept...

wormandbobber,
I got a sneeking suspicion that Bassrods is a whole lot smarter than you think or than he lets on...

...besides, I am not sure being a marine biologist is a requirement for this forum, at least they didn't ask for my degree when I signed up...
