On Friday I got off work early and picked up my brother-in-law (who’s middle school was on spring break) to try to catch some bass. I’m not from around here so after doing some research on this site we decided to drive up to a body of water that seems to be referred to around here as the I-80 pond. After figuring out how to get my canoe over a massive pipe and in the water we were fishing. The water was a little cold and there was a slight breeze but the pond looked very bassy. As we rowed against the slight breeze to the far end of the pond I saw a fish jump towards the bank. It completely cleared the surface of the water and looked to be about 2 pounds. We were getting excited. We passed by some nice looking stumps in the water and looked forward to hitting those on our float back. We started fishing with our go-to lures. I used a 7” green colored worm. My brother used a white spinnerbait. We were both using fairly heavy line, still on our reels from fighting bigger fish last summer in Minnesota. I had 17lb fluorocarbon, he was using 14lb mono.

Here’s the list: 5” sinko, chatterbait, buzzbait, grub, doubletail hula grub, jig’n’pig, fluke, chiggercraw, tubes, and various plastic worms of different colors. We fished from about 2:30 to 4:30 with no bites. We decided it was a good adventure and maybe worth another try on a warmer day. We packed up the canoe, jumped in the HOV lane, and headed back south to a community pond in Utah County where we have caught a few baby bass in the past. Again, not a bite in about 1 hour of fishing with our favorite lures.

Our last chance to catch a fish was a quick run over to the Provo for a few casts before dark. We fished near the Center Street bridge. The water was pretty fast but there were still a few fishable holes. We threw spinners and rapalas. My brother caught one small brown trout on the rapala. I didn’t see it but I’ll take his word for it. I had two fish swirl on a blue fox spinner but no hook up, and no fish for me on this trip. We had a great time but we’re still itching to catch some bass.

So is the I-80 pond worth fishing again or am I wasting my time? It looked good and the jumping fish gave me hope that this little pond could produce. I recently moved to Utah to be closer to my wife’s family so any tips are appreciated. I practice catch and release at all times. I have my canoe and access to a relative’s bass boat once or twice a year. Thanks.
