It seemed to be getting that time of year again when the catfish are in the shallows for the spawn and the wife and I both had half days at work, so I talked her into walking out to the honey hole from last year to give it a try. Let me tell you, afternoon well spent. It took us a while to find the first one, but it was a doozy! I didn't have a tape to measure length, but it weighed in at 9lb 2oz, and ended up being the biggest of the day. Really wish I'd have thought to bring the net, it was interesting trying to grab it out of the water. From then on, the fishing was fast. We both ended up catching 5 fish each, for a combined total of over 50 lbs of fish in two and a half hours. All were released because all of them had huge bellies which I'm assuming were full of eggs. All were caught on carp meat. I'm putting up a picture of the biggest 2.

Nice report and pictures Karl, thanks for sharing. Great looking cats for sure. Must be nice to have a wife that likes to fish. Did you see other folks fishing in the area? WH2

[#0000ff]Although the females are already showing large bellies...full of eggs...they will not spawn for about another month. Water temps need to rise a bit more. Right now they are just happy to be in open water with warming temps and they are puttin' on the feed bag. Glad you found a few of the hungry ones.[/#0000ff]

Wow, nice fish. I keep hoping the catfish will start biting on Utah Lake, but I've been skunked each time I've fished UL this spring. I had great luck last summer, but I think I am giving up on UL for at least a couple weeks. I've been getting my fix by catching trout up at deer creek. I'm hoping that May will bring some warmer temps and wake the cats up.

There were a couple other people that showed up in a boat a little ways off about an hour before we left, but that was it. And TubeDude, thanks for the info. Always good to know a bit more about what I'm catching.

I hit LB today in search of the mythical walleye and then took a shot at the cats with some frozen chubs I had with me. Tried south of the dike and near the rushes around by the walleye fishermen. The chub I was using for bait was the only thing I "caught."
I believe the walleye and the coelaocanth have about the same population densities. When the cats are on I'm in heaven. Bring on the warmer temps to fire up those cats. Can't wait.
Congrats on the ones you nailed!

Very nice fish! Things should only get better from here for awhile as long as the weather stays warm. Thanks for the post.

My pole was bent in half for all of them and my back was sore after the big one.

catfish are the easiest fish in the world to catch. in fact it's the only type of fishing where I get bored because it's so simple.
