Just tried them for the first time yesterday. No positive results to post but I'm sure they'd work in some situations.

When I used to use salmon eggs I always used the fire balls. I would place them a couple of feet below a bobber (sometimes lower depending upon depth of fish) then place a small lead splitshot about 8-12 inches aboce the hook and would get lots of trout on them.

I find that the orange GULP power bait balls in the short jar are fantastic. I use two on a gold samon egg hook with a 25 inch leader of 4lb test tied to a swivel with an small egg weight above that. I killed them all last year.
They work great at all the local ponds for trout. I got the pictures to prove it.
