I have been to Bullfrog a couple of times but never to Hite. I was thinking of going there this friday and saturday. Could someone please offer any helpful advice about the fishing and camping possibilities. Is there a campground at the ramp? If not, can a guy set up a tent next to the ramp area and just kind of camp out of the truck without having to find a beach? As far as fishing, I am a beginner bass guy that just wants to hone his skills a little. I don't expect to catch monsters but would love to get in to enough fish to learn some bass habits and techniques. Thanks in advance.

As, has been stated, wayneswords.com is the definitive source on lake powell. I watch it daily for Hite reports and it looks like the fishing is sizzling right now.

Camping is available right on the beach at Hite or you can camp on the lake, but certain restrictions apply, primarily about having a port-a-potty with you. Wayneswords has a link to camping info

Since the runoff is beginning, the water at Hite can get muddy. A better option might be to camp in farleys canyon which is down lake a few miles and accessible by road. Great fishing is close at hand

If you don't already have one, I recommend that you purchase a "Fish N Maps", from Cabelas, sportsmans, etc. The "north lake powell "is what you want. Cost is about $7.00. The map will show you all of the locations around Hite you will read about on wayneswords, plus it is a valuable asset on the big lake.

Good luck on your trip and please be careful. If the winds come up....get off the lake. Please let us know how you do.

Thanks Mac and Pez,
I have been reading wayneswords for a week now but wanted to hear directly from some forum members.
I have the potty and the fishing map already loaded in the boat.
I read a report about Farleys and it mentioned a big rock in the road that is tough to get around. What is your opinion of navigating the road and launching with my extended cab Dodge and 18' Crestliner?
Please keep comments coming.
Thanks again,Shane

I was there over the weekend. I launched from Farley's without trouble, but I was pulling a 14' Crestliner with a Hyundai SantaFe, so that's a little different. But I did see people with trucks and bass boats. The biggest problem I see is getting turned around at the bottom of the ramp. I don't think the rock will be a big problem, but I was barely able to flip around to put the boat in and I'm guessing I have a lot tighter turning radius than your truck. I would say it's worth a try. Worst case scenario, you have to drive four miles back up the 95 to Hite to launch.

As for camping, we set up camp at the mouth of Farley canyon. There was a nice flat rock slab right on the water that provided an awesome campsite. Camping was just as fun as fishing.

We did make a run in the boat up to Hite to get some ice, and it looked miserable up there. It was a cluster[#bf0000](removed)[/#bf0000]of tents, trucks, and RVs. The water was 8' deep and muddy as all hell. If you have to launch from Hite, you should still go to Farley or somewhere similar to camp.

I haven't fished it for a few years since the water dropped, but we use to launch at Hite and have another person run the truck down to Farley's. Great fishing from there, with fairly short runs to Trachite, White's, 2 mile and 4 mile canyons. My favorite is Red Canyon which is farther down the lake, even Farley's itself can be good fishing. Had a friend that just got back from there and said the upper end was full of boats last weekend, but they caught a mess of huge crappie along with lmb & smb. Good luck on your trip. Take some pictures to post.

I think that I'd launch at Hite and have someone in your party take the truck to Farleys and set up camp there. There will be less campers there and faster access to cleaner water. When you're ready to com home, pack up camp and send the boat back to Hite for retrieval. Have a great time.
