We're heading to Powell next week. Does anyone know if a boat can be launched in Farley Canyon?
Oops! I should read first, then post. There is info on launching at Farley Canyon in a another post on Powell.

The answer is; there is no established launch ramp in Farleys, but you can launch a small boat. Getting a big boat in there is problematic
. I'd launch at Hite and camp in Farleys if you want your truck near by and assuming you're tent camping. You might consider camping on the beach in 4 mile, 2 mile or some other location on a sandy beach. I guess that brings up another question; How big and heavy is your camp? If it won't fit in the boat with all of your passengers and fishing gear then Farleys is the answer.
Best of luck and watch the winds in April.
Yes you can launch there easier then you can at Hite, but you better have the paper work with you or get the ticket at $2400. min... They check each day...

Cliff I didn't understand what you meant about a fine, is that for launching at Farleys or for a permit that is needed for camping on the shore? I haven't been there for awhile. Thanks for any info.

im pretty sure he meant the boat inspections for zebra mussles and such

The quagga mussel self certification forms are available at the launch ramp at Hite. They will not be available at Farleys.
Pick one up at Hite, fill it out, launch the boat then take the truck to farleys with the certification form on the dash of the truck. Failure to fill out the form is very serious. The fine could ruin your trip.
If the NPS (National Park Service) officers check in Farleys and see a boat trailer behind a truck they will immediately check for the form. If it's not there......very bad deal.
I expect that sooner or later the UDWR will wake up and start enforcing the law. I just hope that it is not too late by then.
I'm headed down there next week. Is there a way to download the quagga certification form online so it can be filled out early? Once you get to the lake you want to fish. I'll surf a little more and see if I can find it...

Thanks for the info, I know I had to fill them out last summer at some of the other lakes we fished in Utah. When we fish the walleye tournaments in Montana we have to have the boats inspected by Fish & Game and get an inspected sticker to put on the boat prior to putting our boats in the water. There was no charge for it the last time I fished there, not sure if there will be a charge for this service this year or not. I think Utah needs to start charging a fee for this like some of our nieghboring states, as long as it all goes toward the program.

self certifications are no longer valid, though i dont think thats what you had linked... either way your going to get your boat inspected:

i dident realiuze it until i looked at the cert itself.... that one is indeed valid for Hite. no good for bull frog, wahweap, stateline, and antelope. good find!

To launch at any "major" launch self certification is no longer valid.
Hite has an "on call" inspector that you have to call if your boat does not meet the "self inspection" questions on the form.
If in doubt, have the boat inspected by a qualified inspector.

This whole process is very simple: If you launch from a major launch ramp there should be inspectors on site to examine your boat. Providing you haven't been on contaminated waters, Those inspectors will give you a form to display on your dash and you can launch.
On ramp area that are not manned by inspectors, like most of them are in Utah, the forms are available in a box by the signs warning about quaggas. Fill out the very simple form and put it on your dash and launch. Couldn't be simpler
Hite does not have full time inspectors so you are allowed to self-certify. Same procedure as the majority of ramps in Utah. Forms are available on the ramp.
Farleys is a primitive launch site and there are no forms available there, hence it is necessary to get the forms, either on-line, or at hite. Couldn't be easier!
Incidentally, I keep a small pad of the blank forms in my truck. I got them from an inspector at Wahweap and I ALWAYS have one on my dash when I launch. If the forms are not available at the dispenser at the launch ramp and you don't have one in your truck...You'll be explaining it to a judge.
This is a very serious threat to our water and it cannot be dismissed as unimportant, but there is no reason to make it more complicated than it is. Fill out the form, put it on the dash....You're done!
Thanks so much for the information. I wasn't sure if some Utah waters also made your vessel a threat. I know that the DWR is looking into infestation in Pelican and Red Fleet waters. I've been on Pelican so I didn't want to be a threat to Powell.
Thanks again for the info. I'm launching from Hite, so a self inspection will do.

Not sure if you meant to direct that to me or not, I know what the inspections are and how to fill out the forms, I just didn't understand what Cliff was talking about some info got left out in his post.

I wasn't directing anything at anyone.
Through the months I have read of numerous anglers expressing the desire to fish Powell and plenty of them have never been there before and have no idea what to think.
My post was not new information to many of the readers, however, it was meant to provide some in-sight to those who are contemplating a trip in the recent future and the not so foreseeable future. Some will go...some will dream, but the more they know what to expect, the more likely a trip is in their future
That's what gives this site it strength, many people giving in-sight as to what they know, have observed or think. The vast majority is excellent information. I have gleaned much information in this vast warehouse of knowledge, much of it made me a better fisherman, other information prepared me better as I explored hitherto unknown to me, waters.
If I offended anyone, I apologize. I respect everyone that posts here. There was nothing personal in this or anything else I have ever posted. My goal is to share what little I can. If my choice of words is lacking in sensitivity....once more I apologize.
No offense taken, it was just that you replied to me so I wasn't sure who you were talking to. You had some good info. I'm sure some of the guys headed that way can find it usefull.
