BRISTOL, Tennessee - The FLW Bass Fishing League is headed to South Holston Reservoir May 1 for the third of five stops in the Volunteer Division series. As many as 400 boaters and co-anglers will be competing for top awards of up to $8,000 and $3,000, respectively.

"The fish are going to be post-spawn," said FLW Tour pro Ott Defoe of Knoxville, Tenn., who loves to fish the Holston system. "Fish aren't going to be at their prime, but South Holston is known as a good smallmouth fishery so anglers should do all right.

"Most of the fish will be found around rock and gravel points; I would stay in the mid-depth range, about 6-12 feet and throw shaky heads. If water levels are up along the shoreline bushes that should offer some productive fishing as well.

"If you can find them the largemouth will be good; they don't get bothered a lot and tend to hide in the shallow water."

Takeoff and weigh-in will be at Observation Knob Park located at 553 Knob Park Road in Bristol, Tenn. Takeoff is scheduled for 6:30 a.m. while weigh-in will begin at 2:30 p.m. Takeoffs and weigh-ins are free and open to the public.

The South Holston Reservoir BFL tournament is being hosted by the Bristol Tennessee Virginia Chamber of Commerce.

Bass Fishing League competition is a 24-division league circuit devoted to weekend anglers, that offers even bigger prizes to qualifiers of the regional championship and those who make it to one of the longest-running championships in all of competitive bass fishing - the BFL All-American presented by Chevy. Top winners in the BFL can move up to the American Fishing Series or even the FLW Tour.
