Chad Miller and I fished the Boysen walleye tournament last weekend at Boysen reservoir in the middle of Wyoming. The weather was beautiful as you can see from the pictures we took on Friday. Sorry we don’t have many pictures from other days it seems the 6 foot waves or rain made pulling out the camera for a photo op a little risky! We ended up placing 19th on a lake we had not fished before with 22.08 lbs for our total weight. The top 5 teams had 30 – 35lbs. It was a great learning experience and while we didn’t place in the top 10 as was our goal we did make the top 3rd which under the conditions we were very pleased with.
I did learn that my tent can stand up to sustained winds in the 50mph + range and gusts up to 75ish.
I'd like to thank ROger and Debbie Shafer for putting us up in their new house on Saturday night. Sure saved us some time not haveing to pack up camp after the tournament Sunday. I'll always be truly grateful to BFT for forming that tremendous friendship. I also really enjoyed camping and fishing with a master like Chad for 5 days. I learned a tremendous amount about finding walleyes in really tough conditions. His boat handling skills in 6 foot waves from 2 directions are second to none as well.
As Chad stated in his post the fishing was tough!. Between the post spawn and continuous cold front conditions it was to say the least a tough bite. The key for us was to target the smaller and more aggressive males as we could not seem to ge the suspended females to bite. We couldn't buy a bite on a bottom bouncer rig and even Lindy rigs were ineffective. Almost all of our fish came on a jig and leech or jig and minnow drug VERY slo-o-o-o-o-ow on the bottom.

Todd, Chad,
A picture is worth a thousand words. Chad, nice boat. Probably looks better without the snow. Hope to go to Starvation the 14th. When are you guys planning a trip - I would guess it is coming up. Have you heard of any reports. What weekend was the Toothy Angler tourney last year?

Fod,
Just got off the phone with Bob and he is at Starvation for the next couple of days. He has the tin boat next to the bathrooms. He said that this afternoon there were 4 footers and did not put in. If you are out that away look him up. I will be getting reports tomorrow.

The wind today was off the charts. It has been waring on me for the past two weeks. WHITE CAPS SUCK, this year compared to last @ starvy has been 100% worse for me, than the last year, I am almost convinced that with all the wind and the high water, the fish have been spawning in different areas than the inlets and points. THEY HAVE TO BE DONE spawning SOON. And then I am hoping they follow the there predictable patterns. I may be thinking about it too much.[blush][crazy]

Thanks Rick! I would like to get up there in the next couple of weeks but I am headed to McConaughy for the Nebraska Walleye Trail Tournament on the 22nd and 23rd....so the local fishing may have to wait until June. By the way, are you fishing any of the CWA tournaments?
Doens't sound like there is going to be a Toothy Anglers tournament this year so the first one will be Catch a Cure on June 26th....and both Todd and I will be there. Keep us updated on how Bob does!

Hey Fod......any idea of what the water temperature might be right now? I would assume they are done spawning and there should be some aggressive males to be caught somewhere....if the weather allows you to get there and fish it.
Have you tried shallow?

Yo Chad, I have heard word the temps are 47-51 degrees from what a guy told me it was. I have not fished off a boat yet this year. The wind has been too strong for me to take the drifter out. I do know of a few eyes being caught in the inlet but I have not been lucky enough yet. It figures, that on the only calm day I have been out here for probably the last month I have to work a triple, yea that is right a triple. I might go there today for maybe an hour or so just to get away from work. I should try cranking in the shallows from shore. I cant believe I still have not hit a walleye yet out of there this year. Hopefully everything will even out in a week or two.

Rick, Bob, FOD, glad you guys are all out fishing. Sorry you're not doing much catching. The weather has been crazy this year for sure... I'm busy at home catching up on the "home work" this weekend after being gone for a week to "sunny" Wyoming.
It sounds like the walleye are turning on at Willard. Rick if you're going to be up at Starvation next weekend I might try to run up on Saturday. Looks like the weather will be great this weekend and then get shitty early in the week, warming again next weekend. Just in time for your trip. I haven't been on the lake at all this year since ice out so will definately be a hunt. I am really looking forward to this year on Starvation. The monster perch are really taking off and the walleyes are in the best condition I've seen in the past 3 years. I have high hopes to finally catch that elusive 10 pounder this year.
By next weekend there ought to be some fish on those flats where we got them early last year and I'm thinking like Chad that there should also be some fish seeking warmer water in the shallows
