This past Saturday May 1st Crappie USA held a qualifying event at Coosa Landing on Neely Henry Lake Gadsden, Alabama. These anglers were competing for not only cash and prizes, but a chance to advance to the prestigious Cabela's Crappie USA Classic to be held this Fall on the Pickwick/Wilson Lakes in Alabama.
Semi-Pro Division Results
Taking first place was the Cave Spring, Georgia team of Phil Trapp and Larry Hayes with a total weight of 10.14 pounds and earning $1,000.00. Phil and Larry were fishing down river in creeks off the main lake using black/chartreuse Southern Pro jigs tipped with live bait in 12 feet of water. The team was targeting white crappie that had not yet spawned. The team caught 20-25 keeper crappie during the day.
Second place went to the Paducah, Kentucky team of Don Travis and David Dean with 9.82 pounds and earning $600.00. Don and David started out fishing the south end of the lake in 10-15 feet of water then moved into 20-25 feet of water in search of pre-spawning white crappie using Southern Pro jigs tipped with live bait in manmade beds and catching over 60 fish throughout the day..
In third place was Jo and Henry Haley of Carmi, Illinois weighing in 9.3 pound and earning $400.00. Jo and Henry were tightlining black/chartreuse jigs tipped with minnows in 9-12 feet of water catching mostly black crappie. During the day they moved to many different areas of the lake trying to locate white crappie knowing these fish would bring their weight up. Jo and Henry caught over 30 fish for the day.
David Stancil of Oxford, Alabama and Earl Brink of Cummings, Georgia took fourth place with a weight of 8.31 pounds. David and Earl fished several different areas of the lake using Show Down jigs tipped with minnows with orange/chartreuse working the best in 16 feet of water.
Fifth place went to Roy Capes Jr of Cordelle, Georgia and Robert Harris of Warner Robbins, Georgia with a total weight of 8.16 pounds. Roy and Robert had to leave early before the interviews.
Amateur Division Results
In first place in the amateur division was Gary Stevens of Guntersville, Alabama and Terry Rutherford of Marietta, Georgia with a total weight of 9.74 pounds and earning $700.00. Gary and Terry were fishing up river in the current using black/chartreuse jigs tipped with minnows in 12-14 feet of water catching over 35 fish throughout the day.
Second place went to Randy Jenkins of Cartersville, Georgia and Duard Hulgan of Fort Payne, Alabama with a weight of 9.5 pounds and earning $450.00. Randy and Duard caught over 70 fish during the day fishing the main river in 7-9 feet of water using minnow and jig combination and shooting some docks.
Taking third place was Alan Mobbs and Carlton Teague of Gaylesville, Alabama with a weight of 9.18 pounds and earning $300.00. Alan and Carlton were fishing down river using shad blue/chartreuse and red and white Southern Pro Stingers.
In fourth was the team of Stanley and Rhonda Steed of Cave Springs, Georgia with a weight of 8.41 pounds and earning $300.00. Stanley and Rhonda were fishing mid lake in 5-6 feet of water catching over 30 fish using live bait over heavy cover.
Fifth place went to the team of Kendall Pate of Pinson, Alabama and Joe Duncan of Hinceville, Alabama with a weight of 7.93 pounds and earning $200.00. Kendall and Joe were shooting docks in deep water using purple/chartreuse jigs fishing north to south on the lake targeting better looking docks with lots of shade. The team caught over 12 fish throughout the day.

Big Fish Award
Taking big fish of the event was the Paducah, Kentucky team of Don Travis and David Dean with a 2.04 pound crappie and earning $365.00. Second place in the big fish contest was the team of Randy Jenkins of Cartersville, Georgia and Duard Hulgan of Fort Payne, Alabama with a 1.89 pounds crappie and earning $165.00.
Crappie USA Free Kids Fishing Rodeo
In conjunction with the tournament Crappie USA held their Kids Rodeo on Saturday morning with several local children attending the event. All the participants signed up for a chance to win one of 6-$2,000.00 scholarships to be drawn for at the Cabela's Crappie USA Classic.
Crappie USA and our anglers have contributed nearly $290,000.00 to the "Crappie Kids" Scholarships since 1997. We are very proud to be a part of the education process for the youngsters who participate in our tournaments as adult/youth teams and those who fish in the Crappie USA "Kids Fishing Rodeos".
