[fishon]If you have ever fished for steel head or salmon you know that when they hit, sometimes they take off like a freight train. Although mono filament has some stretch to it, this trick will make sure that when the fish hit hard your line will never break.
With this trick you can catch bigger fish with lighter line.
So here is the formula ( line weight X 30% )
EXAMPLE 10LB TEST x 30% = 3lbs( this is what the scale should read when the drag is set properly)
You will need a digital scale although a spring scale will work as well.
1) Figure out what lb. test you are using and multiply that by 30%.
2) Attach the scale to something heavy or solid on the ground ( you can have a freind hold it as well)
3)Reel in while adjusting the drag.
Using the example above 10 lb X 30%= 3 lbs.
You have properly set your drag when: You can pull up on your rod and the scale reads 3 lbs.and your drag should barley let line out at this stage. You have now set your drag.
