If you guys ever venture into Canada you need to be aware of this. Here's a link to a post that will let you know how thankful I am to still be posting on this forum. Could have been lights out for me in the wee hours of yesterday morning.
Check this out.

Hi guys,

I just got back from a speckled trout trip in the wilds of Superior. (Float tube not yak!) After the experience my friend and I had last night I will no longer drive the Trans Canada after dark. Below is the account as I related it to my yakfisher friend, Bob (Bubba)

"By the Grace of our loving Lord, Bob and I arrived safely this morning at 3:45 am. Between Sault St. Marie and Sudbury we came within inches of hitting a huge cow moose. It was after dark and I was driving the Forester around 105/110 kph. We were enjoying Bill Cosby on my mp3 player. All of a sudden we had the closest encounter with the big moose. The big cow was crossing oblivious to the presence of my vehicle. Suddenly, it was just there!

To imagine how close we were to "meeting our maker" think of a horse coming to your driver window to take an apple from your hand. If my window had been open I could have touched her. She was that close. My reaction was to rotate the steering wheel an inch or two in the direction away from her and she raised her head with this “holy ****” look on her face and the top of my vehicle went under her head and we passed without contact. A normal violent knee jerk reaction would have had me cranking the wheel frantically and probably flipping the car off the road or into the animal. I know it was the Lord’s presence that made me turn the wheel just ever so slightly to keep us away from tragedy. Praise God! We’re safe at home and exhausted. Would you believe there is no gas on the Trans Canada Highway between the Sault and Parry Sound? If not for the Esso station at Parry Sound we would have had to pull over to sleep in the car until something opened up in the morning."

Next time I'll be in a motel room enjoying a good night's sleep! I sure am thankful to be here relating this to my yakfishing friends. Now you know why they call me "God Bless, Don"

God Bless,
Don

Do you have any proof to that?

If that's the Micheal I think it is, his Tongue would be planted firmly in his cheek as he typed that response. Here's a report for you.

Glad you're still with us Don. I have a buddy that has to drive through Algonquin park regularly. If it's after dark, he pulls over until a transport truck comes along, then tucks in behind it all the way through the park so it can "clear the road" for him.

I actually thought about that before the encounter. Think I'll just get a room next time and continue in the daylight. Here's some pics. The moose's face is stored in my brain.

Gettin' There

We took the Agawa Canyon train then switched to ATV's. Some boys from Windsor came in at the same time. They visit Bass Pro in Detroit on a regular basis as you can see by their camo stuff.

Modus Operandi

I preferred rowing my boat over to my preferred spot which wasn't to far from the lodge. My friend Bob would motor all over the lake and didn't do as well as I did. This lake has nothing but brook trout and many of the big ones were stacked in very deep water up to 100 feet down. Seems impossible for brook trout but the oxygen content is consistent throughout the lake. I never thought "specks" could go that deep though.

Beautiful fish! Here's an example of what we were catching on spinners and spoons or flyrod jigs.

The Windsor boys and everybody else used tandem spinners or floating jig heads with a live worm. We didn't use worms but I have increased respect for the lowly "garden hackle" as it outfished everything else by a significant margin. We had to work for our fish while everyone else let the worms do the work.

When we arrived a week ago Saturday the surface water temp was 49 degrees. When we left Sunday it was up to 60 degrees already. So much for spring.

All in all it was a great trip with a surprise ending which I will remember for the rest of my life.

God Bless,
Don
P.S. If you venture north take note that the black flies are in full swing and they are likely driving the moose out of the bush. Be prepared and above all be very careful.

God Bless,
Don

SERIOUSLY!!!!! FLY-GODDESS- you hit that right on the head. FREEDOM!!!!!!I took my ODC 420 out yesterday and fished with a young military gentleman who has just returned from afar. He was speechless for the first hour or so, I know firsthand how he felt so I did not press for conversation, after his first fish he looked back my way and Smiled and said,,,,,,,,I LOVE THIS PLACE, ( AMERICA ).

last time I checked it was still Land of the FREE.

So we can all think what we want , believe what we want and best of all fish where we want.......please somebody call the WAH-mbulance

Joni and Micheal,

PROOF?

Consider the crimson red dots encircled in a beautiful blue halo in the spotting pattern of the trout. Nuff said!

God Bless,
Don

Yes, it is beautiful to see how the patterns on those fish evolved over millions of years.

Looks like a great trip!.. Ah yes the great canadian highway. Lots of critters to watch out for. Been on it myself before.[cool] Also been on other highways in BC that are covered with critters. Got to watch your speed up there so you don't end up a statistic.[Wink] Glad you had a productive trip anyway!!!!
