I'm dying to know what the fishing report has been at Henrys Lake. I decided to wait until the crowd dies down. Was it worth it battling the crowds?

Friend of mine vaguely reported. Said weather has been a big factor and no fish, so hope others have done better.

We were on the water by 5:30 am on the opener...got in at the state marina...LOTS of cuts spawning in that area and a handful of "fisherman" chasing them. Hit all sides/holes that I know on the lake...managed to boat 5. My nephew was fishing a worm and lost a 9+ pig at the boat! We landed 2 brookies (one 4lbs!-biggest brookie to date for us). [cool][cool] These were by the cliffs out about 100yrds. After staying out on the water through gale force winds/snow/sleet/drizzle....decided to let me daughter and nephew hit the marina with the rest of the great "fisherman"...they loved it-landed around 20 on an egg pattern. Buddy of mine hit it today again and landed a dozen or so and caught a couple of 20+ "ers. He did the marina thing too. Egg patterns and orange midge in size 16-18 seemed to work best. sorry-all pics on my iphone and haven't taken the time to download them yet.

We went up Wednesday and fished the Madison and Hebgen until Saturday then hit up Henry's. In the morning we couldn't catch a fish if our life depended on it but at about 2:00 PM it just turned on. Caught fish steady for the next 3 hours, then it turned off again. Didn't fish Sunday, found them again this morning and caught them for about 2 hours and then they just shut off again. Nothing to big, just your average 2-5 pounders. Mostly cuts with a few hybrids. Never could get them to take any big leeches, everything was on small nymphs on floating lines.
Most the fish were like these.

Sounds like Henrys didn't disappoint! I guess I better get up there this weekend.---

The weather did seem to play a factor. The wind blew out of the south for a couple of days before the opening, with several storms alongside, and continued for about half of Saturday itself. The North side got pretty muddy. I never got onto the orange midge, damn. I used a bug net and everything. 3 days of fishing hard, 3 small fish. Of course, I lost 9 fish that I had on the line, which is ridiculous. Also, I broke my foot Friday night in my sleep, a foot which has already had 3 major surgeries due to injury. All in all, a fantastic trip, had a glorious time!
My uncle and father managed to pull 14 fish a piece in the same time on steelie spoons in gold, and gold + fluorescent orange. My gf got skunked, owner of the cabin caught 4. fwiw I got all my strikes on very bright colored flies, big and small, except a black/purple UV mohair leech. I heard the south end of the lake was better, but we acted like homebodies up in the northwest corner, and down to Duck Creek where the water was clear. It was a mistake to stick on that side of the lake the whole time, and I knew it deep down inside, but I didn't want to bust up the party. Live and learn (to go to Henry's Lake in fall, when it always rocks).
Addendum: I predict the whole lake will turn on like a locomotive as soon as the water warms up a tad bit. A lot of anglers never make it up to the lake because they get distracted by all the the rivers on the way, and who can blame them?
Despite my experience this year, I strongly recommend fishing it in the next month.

I will see you there in the fall[

I do plan on a couple of trips real soon here though. The old mans gas motor on his pontoon wis going to get us to where we need to be without pulling out and driving around....Wahoo

We fished Henry's for a few hours Monday morning (fantastic weather) and got skunked. I tried chronomids and leeches of all sizes and colors. The others in the boat were using spinners and bait. We mostly fished about a 100 yards off the cliffs and there were boats nearby that were doing ok on worms.
The guys that were really pulling them were the guys near the state dock. It was shoulder to shoulder (not my style) and I heard red copper john's were getting hit well. Lots of fish there. Loading the boat at the dock I saw 4 big ones swim over the concrete pad.

So, Ice Cream Cone or what they call the Barber Pole would have worked.[laugh][

Ok...quit being lazy and downloaded a few pics from my phone. First will be that brookie...my brother is 6'3" and his hand from palm-end of finger is just under 9"s. The brookie was right at 20"s long!-and what a football! The other few pics will be of my daughter and her cuttie from the marina, cooler full of "bloated" lake trout from the flathead trip where we jigged them up from 250'+ and their air bladders blew up. Then one of those laker's fileted....then the last one is of a recente kokanee trip with a buddy!!! gotta love those filets!!!(filets pic followed)
