Anyone else having a fish kill this year? I know pymatuning is having a really bad one. They are saying it's due to the crazy temperature changes we had this year. 2,500 fish have washed up so far.

[#005000]Frankly in my opinion, I don't believe the weather was cause of the fish kill! Do a little more investigation in the matter! could be Illegal dumping or raw sewage spill something in that order! But this is my opinion![/#005000]

more like tempreture changes due to chemical dumping in the water by some corp that was looking to save a wad of doe.

There were five Crappie floating at the spot I went to the other night down at Sayers Damn and two at another spot I was at afew nights before that. Down there I think its a problem with there being to many fish. They need to lowwer the size limit.

Fish die offs are normaly seen with in the first 30 days of ice off. that is when you get the major temp changes.

When you see fish kills you should report them as soon as posible to local athorities, news papers, and your local DNR,

you may even want to contact them early to see if they want you to retrieve one for you to turn in.

wen they stocked cat for the first time in the urban lakes this year they all died because of game and fish not checking the PH before stocking

fish can die if introduced from a tank to a body of water with a drastic water temp differance.

PH, that has to do with acidic or alcoline. the only thing that would cause fish to die because of that would be if there was a toxin in the water greater than the fish could handle.

we have a lot of lakes w/ golden alga, it's like 75% and i went to red mt park to day and all the larger cats that they stocked (4-6 lbs) died [Image: bobmad.gif] I am going to call are game and fish and give them a word or to and most of the bass that are in the urban lakes have a bug (some time of intestinal parasite) so I am not so happy

there are a number of lakes here in michigan that have fish of wich have parasites.

There is a cople ways of riding them of the worms "tape and others" Salt water soaks over night in cold water before cooking, Freezing before cooking and be sure to get the internal temp up to 165 degrees when cooking.

This wont get rid of the toxin that is released in the red tide of the gulf and atlantic or pacific. That is called Scrombroid. "sory spelling" it is deadly to humans. the fish get infected with the toxin by eating the alge and eating the fish that eat the alge.

I have not heard of a fresh water alge that causes the same affects as the red tieds. It is not listed in our cooking regulations in my county wich has one of the toughest guide lines in the country.

You do have to take special care of eating raw fish from fresh water lakes, you can get tape worms, but that is not the worst, there is a small worm that is pointed on either end, white to pinkish to redish color. if that gets in to your system, there is no cure. It will stay in your body and work it way in to your brain, and it is a long painfull death.

if you see the fish with black bumps on them and when you cut them open you find tubers, those can be cut out, the state says you can cook them and they will be fine, not me, I just asoon move to a new fishing location when I start catching spotted fish.

they get the parisites from living neary mucky swampy areas or areas with houses that have sump pumps dumping in to the lakes.

I think that is a good idea on your part, you should always report any fish kill, and again having a specimen to give to the biologist makes their job easier.

thanks Dave and I think I will do so and I was taking to a guy that was stocking and he said we i get a bass w/ the "bug" in it take it to game and fish

and I guess that golden alga can kill fish but it won't kill humans (I think it's because they fill the lakes w/ water form the canal that is near by)

I can understand why it dosnt kill humans, Humans dont eat floating dead fish.

be sure you go in with concern and not to complain. and it never hurts to contact the local media about it either...
