Breaking NewsChinook fishing to close on part of Clearwater River Sunday
June 3, 2010, 12:19 pm
The chinook salmon fishing season will close on the Clearwater River between the Orofino Bridge and Lewiston and the North Fork of the Clearwater River a half-hour after sunset Sunday.

The rest of the main Clearwater River and its Middle Fork will close to fishing at the end of angling hours June 13.

Officials at the Idaho Department of Fish and Game have determined sport anglers are approaching their share of the run in the Clearwater basin.

"Through the end of May we were at about 56 percent of the harvest share. We are estimating we would likely be at about 80 percent of harvest share by Sunday evening," said Sam Sharr, a fisheries biologist for the department at Boise. "We are far enough along toward our harvest share we feel it's import we make sure we have some fish available for folks in the Kamiah and Kooskia areas and the tributary fisheries."

After June 13, the only open chinook fisheries in the Clearwater Basin will be in the South Fork of the Clearwater and Lochsa rivers.

Sharr said there is no danger of fisheries on the Lower Salmon River or Snake River in Hells Canyon closing in the near future.
