My buddy and I decided to get in a lot of quality fishing time this weekend. We started saturday afternoon on Utah lake from a boat. We launched from the state park marina and headed into Provo bay. It was pretty windy, but we both ended up catching 7 catfish each. We caught a few bull heads, but most of the cats were "cookie cutters" between 18-20" and around 2 lbs. My buddy landed the biggest cat weighing in at 4 lbs. It was a great way to spend a saturday evening, but sunday morning was even better.
I've been obsessed with trying to catch a pike for a few weeks now. Over memorial weekend, I fished 8 hours in a lake by Ely, NV for pike and couldn't land a single fish. A BFT member suggested that I try Redmond Resevoir, so me and a couple of my friends headed to Redmond sunday morning. We brought the tubes, and launched around 7:30 AM. I fished lures and jigs from the tube for about an hour and a half. I didn't get a single hit. My friends were fishing cut-bait under a bobber and caught a few small catfish. The lake is really shallow, so I decided to throw out a bait line with my second pole while I worked the shoreline in my waders. Still no luck with my lures, but my bait rod was nearly pulled under the water by a really fat, hard-fighting carp. I got to the pole in time, and was able to land the fish. It was a good fight, and the carp weighed in just over 6 lbs. I threw my bait out again, and went back to working the shore. I was probably 15-20 feet away from shore and I was casting parallel with the shoreline. I couldn't even get a nibble. I was getting pretty frustrated because the action seemed to have died. My friends weren't even landing cats at this point. I noticed a splash in the rocks about 6" away from the shoreline. I cast my lure right into that same spot, and as soon as my lure touched the water, I got a huge hit and a fish on my line. I started to reel him in, but the crafty little sucker headed strait to the bottom and dug in behind some rocks. I tried walking toward him to get him above the rocks. Every time I gave him slack he would run strait out from me and then right back into the same group of rocks. He did this 3 times, and the third time he shredded my line on the rocks and got away. I was furious, but at least I figured out how to catch them. I started casting a rapala 6-12" from the rocky shore line. The pike would hit almost instantly when the lure hit the water. Finally! I caught my first pike. It measured in at 19". I landed two more pike within minutes. Another 19 incher, and the biggest I caught was 21". I would've been satisfied with just the pike, but I had another "first". As I was working back over the same shoreline, I hooked up again. It felt pretty big, but it wasn't fighting the same way that the other pike did. I had no idea what it was until I brought it in and saw its bucket mouth. So, not only did I catch my first pike at Redmond, I also caught my first large mouth bass. The fishing gods were definitely smiling upon me. When I got back to my bait rod, I got to reel in one more cat. Unfortunately, my friends were not as lucky. They didn't catch anyting after the early catfish.
Over all, it turned out to be an awesome fishing weekend.

It was awesome. I took some pictures with my cell phone, so the quality isn't great, and for some reason I can't get the picture of my large mouth or the bigger pike to send to my email.[inline "fisrt pike"]

Congrats on your first Pike. Curious to know how those fish tasted? I have heard that the minerals in the water at Redmond make the fish taste awful (then someone else reported that they taste fine).

I did not eat any of the fish. I let my friend have them. I love catching fish, but I have never been a fan of eating them.
